Graffiti to be blitzed in Isleworth and Syon 10th March 2007

Residents are being asked to join police and council staff at a blitz on graffiti and litter. An ambitious plan of action has been put together to combat graffiti focussing on affected walls, community buildings, parks, park buildings, benches and telephone boxes.Residents are asked to pull on some old clothes and join in. Clean-ups start from Isleworth railway station at 10.30am, and Isleworth public hall at 11am. All equipment will be provided. Cllr Phil Andrews, Hounslow Council’s lead member for housing and community safety, said: “These weekend clean-ups are a great opportunity for people to make a real, visible difference to their local area and have some fun too. If you can spare some time, please get involved.”The cleaning blitz has been organised by the Isleworth Society, St John’s Residents Association and Hounslow’s Community Safety Partnership, a collaboration of agencies including Hounslow Council and Hounslow Police. A recent, similar event proved successful when two neglected areas of Brentford were spruced up. People who live on the Syon Estate joined in the second of two clean-up days on February 18, which focused on the community centre at Hawthorn Hatch.More than 150 bags of litter and flytipped rubbish were taken away during the blitz on February 18, attended by about 20 residents, and staff from Hounslow Council and Hounslow Police. The first clean-up day on February 17 centred on a piece of wasteland located between Brentford High Street and Brent Way. The land had become overrun with flytipped rubbish and overgrown vegetation, which was cut back.Three skips of rubbish were removed.Local councillors, including Cllr Jon Hardy (Community Group,Syon), Cllr Paul Fisher (Community Group, Isleworth) and Cllr Shirley Fisher (Community Group, Syon) joined in.
