Owning a big house does not necessarily mean you are wealthy but BROADLY speaking the bigger your home the wealthier you are likely to be. I hope that's clear.

The Council Tax means you pay more the bigger your house is which I described as broadly progressive. Can you explain how that is 'talking rubbish'? Fees, charges, parking permits and the poll tax are flat rate therefore the smaller your income the higher the effective tax rate is. Describing the poll tax as fairer really is talking rubbish but you are right that avoidance of income based tax is possible for the super-rich. Therefore an asset based tax has to come into the equation to ensure that the wealthy pay at least something.

You're talking rubbish about council tax being progressive. The "poll tax" is by far the fairest way, or alternatively, have big government and put the burden entirely on income levies (which will soon be avoided by anyone rich enough to do so).

Haven't you just made a tacit admission that you are doing locally exactly what the Labour party are doing nationally? They recognised that people would always focus on income tax rates so they kept them the same and introduced a range of new or increased charges. Locally it is the Council Tax rate that people focus on and you can keep that lower getting more money from other 'stealth taxes'. The problem is that income tax and Council tax may be imperfect but they are at least broadly progressive in that the richer you are the more you are likely to pay whereas increasing charges, particularly those targeting the vulnerable, means that the less well off tend to pay more.

Paul, I've told you about relying too much on the Daily Mail. It must be QPR driving you to distraction - as a Charlton fan I can recognise the symptoms. Anyway, my favourite from that list:Eventually, the government hopes to introduce Congestion Charging for pedestrians to stop people wandering around unnecessarily and make them stay at home, where the government can keep an eye on them with in-home CCTV [which will be installed as part of a multi-billion-pound scheme to crack down on antisocial behaviour.]Quality stuff.

I agree this is a disgrace.In fact it is worse than that because the same thing is happening at the local Government level. Is there a similar web site that shows how we are being mugged for cash in Hounslow by increased charges such as those for parking permits and visitors vouchers?
