Feltham

My name is Joan and I am researching Feltham. I've tried looking on the web, but to no avail. Could you suggest a site for me to look at. I used to live in the High Street, Spring Corner end. I am from Australia. Jim, Nigel and many others have helped me recently with Brentford and Twickenham. Now I am broadening my search to Feltham where I spent my years from age 9 (1960) to age 15 (1966). Morning Jim. Thank you so much for the postcode. We will get the card off to her in the next few days, which will include photos of what the house used to look like. I'll have to ask June if she remembers Attlee, Morrison and Wilson Houses.  I was having too much fun as a teenager to remember things that would become important later in my life.Oh I remember my dad talking about buying a bag of broken biscuits. Oh yes and the underfed youngsters, holes in trousers and socks. Also holes in shoes. June and I have been working very hard on our past. June has found some great photo's. I have scanned them and now have put them on a disc as a slide show, so we're pretty happy with that.  Jim I know you're a very busy man, but could I ask if the photos you have taken be emailed to me so I can put them on a CD slide show. June's turn to go away, she's gone to visit her daughter in Victoria. On return she's visiting me again to do more work on the folder.  We will then take photos of ourselves and some work we've done on our past. That postcode Joan is....Feltham, Middlesex, TW13  4HXand I'm sure the lady concerned will be thrilled to hear from you.Looking at this Royal Mail, Postcodes Book, I see that in addition to the Bevan Flats across the road...there is also nearby an Attlee House, Morrison House and a Wilson House.That revelation will get one of my Forum friends excited!For myself, Ray Gunter was a man I enjoyed following in the 1960's. He was a South Wales Labour Party man..but he had a good message for the pugnacious Trade Unions at the time. Ruined our country they did!!I'm vearing off subject.  Those pictures of yours were splendid and you captured  some super atmospheric shots along that  Great Ocean Road!.Yes Sainsburys and Tescos are still around and bigger than ever..most things being pre-packed...no butter batting these days..or cutting the chesse with the wire..or watching your bacon being sliced!Can't even try a biscuit from the tin..you have to buy the packet! My favourite in the 1950's was a penny bag of broken biscuits from Woolworths. The lady assistants used to take pity on us underfed youngsters..with holes in our trousers and socks..and often filled the big bag with wholesome surprises!  Chocolate digestives, custard creams and wagon wheels and penguin biscuits being the favourites!

Hi Jim. We returned from our trip yesterday. It was the best scenery I've seen in a long time. The 12 Apostles are now 8. So it was a good opportunity to see what's left. I'll try and put a couple of pics in later.  We travelled 1,675 kms in 4 days. Here's a map. Highlighted in orange is where we went. I hope you can enlarge it. We started at Adelaide, traveled down to the Great Ocean Road, then across the border into Victoria, nearly to the end of the G.O.RD then up to Hamilton to see our Niece then home via Tailem Bend. Below is a view of some of the Apostles. There are only 8 now, but some hidden. Below is the famous 'London Bridge'. In 1990 2 people were on the Ocean side of the bridge when all of a sudden the bridge part collapsed. They had to be rescued by a helicopter. Jim, yes I can vaguely remember that pub. The English certainly know how to build pubs. They always look so 'grand'. I love the Post Box too. Love the Victorian houses and was swept away at the site of the 237 bus to Lower Feltham. Again thank you so much.  Is Tesco's still around in the UK and Sainsburys. I remember buying butter from there and they would shape it into size with wooden paddles with grooves in them. Isn't it silly how little things can be remembered.  Also could you tell me the code for Feltham, so I can post off the card.  Oh and by the way the rains have come, so perhaps the drought will be over. I always come on this site to read what's happening in your community. We do not have anything like this here in Adelaide.  Our local Council only contact us once a year and that's for money. Joan;A trip along that Grand Ocean Road towards Melbourne must have been a spectacle..and we trust all went well.Around the corner from your Feltham home, in your early teens before you went to Australia, would have been this newish Pub:Recognise it?-----------------------------------------------------And around another corner, behind the Church, your local post box!-----------------------------------------------------This terrace of Victorian homes looks well maintained.---------------------------------------------------------This picture taken by "Roll the dice!" on flickr, shows a Lower Feltham bound Routemaster bus en route to passing your home..whilst perhaps you were still in the UK!Hope you've enjoyed those Joan..and glad the the Fourth Cross Road pictures have been recovered.

Dean said thanks Jim. He loves model trains too. But his love is Steam Trains.  In Tailem Bend the main line runs through the middle of the town. Mainly freight trains go through. It's nothing unusual to get caught at both the crossings as the trains are so long. The daily Overlander passenger train goes between Adelaide and Melbourne.As from Wednesday we will be away for a couple of days. We are going to give our 4WD a good run. We are going to travel the Great Ocean Road. http://www.greatoceanroad.org/ It's known for the 12 Apostles, but I think there's only 10 standing. I will take many photos, but will put a link to photobucket to view them. Time for much needed beauty sleep.Regards Joan.

Go to this link to view our Australian trains and trams. You will see the picture of the Red Hen railcars, these were used up until a few years ago. We now have modernised trains. Last year the trams were upgraded to air-conditioned cars. The old Trams were air-conditioned by opening the windows. We in Adelaide are so far behind the other states in Australia. Certainly do remember the railway station. Love the old bridges. I must try and find an Adelaide train that was used not that many years ago. It was called the Red Hen. Say no more. I'll go looking. Even our newer trains aren't as nice as yours. But then we don't have an extensive railway coverage. Great photos.Joan,

Did anyone pick up my error.  Dean did.  I said Dean has the Flying Scotsman train set and the Locomotive is that of The Flying Scotsman!   I should have said the Flying Scotsman train set has a steam engine. Oops!

Hugh,That was a master posting. Brilliant. We're enjoying this!Trains through the Borough and elsewhere? The thread could hit 100 at this rate!Here's Feltham Station by the way. I wonder if Joan remembers this?That office block which was the home of a big company called United Glass, has been converted into a Hotel...occupied by people from all over the world. They stay there, then catch  a bus direct to Heathrow!-------------------------------------------------------I was quietly resting there on a Station bench, munching a super egg and cress sandwich, and cup of tea! on Saturday...and all of a sudden two trains appeared!!  The one approaching was off to Windsor I believe...or was it Weybridge?Blimey it's gone noon..I must be off to work. I owe, I owe, it's off to work we go!

Hello Hugh. I think I've found another character on here. I did have quite a laugh.   Ayers Rock or now called Uluru will never be the same again with that bike rider. I'm only showing off my new skills in posting pics in a forum thanks to my lovely daughters and people on the forum helping me. I'll stop showing off soon. So tell me have you always followed trains? or is this a new found hobby. As I said the boys in my life are train fanatics.   I haven't looked at the sites yet, Dean can do that later, now I'll never get him off the computer. Jim I was reading through the forum this morning and noticed you posted about Hugh and pictures on the steam train thread. So I then invaded the Ealing site to find Hugh. I have a husband and grandsons who are absolutely mad on trains. Especially the Flying Scotsman. Dean has a trainset and the locomotive is that of the Flying Scotsman. I have read through all the postings on Railway Trains and will go through the links when Dean gets home. Our councils in Adelaide do not have forums. So to come and share your forums is just great. Hi Jim, I'm Joan's eldest daughter Natalie.  And must say a huge thank you for taking your time and taking all these fab photos for Mum.  I know my sisters and I are enjoying looking at where mum is from and what it looks like now. Even my kids are enjoying the photos,  they think its strange their nana lived in houses with no front yard! I have been comparing pics from #236 high street from the 1960s with great grandma out the front to now.  I think its wonderful you knocked on the door and such a nice lady lives there willing to have her pic taken and her place.  How wonderful.  Many thanks onces again,  this has truly made mums day looking at all these pics.  Much appreciated in deed.Natalieps...Hi Ma!

Morning Jim. I remember the footpaths being so much wider than they are. Also I think the front gardens look smaller. I can only think they have taken front garden space and narrowed the footpaths for wider roads.The first picture shown this used to belong to a young couple with a child. The extension was put on their house while we were living there.I also noticed cars parked out the front on footpaths. Do they no longer have access to the laneway at the rear of their houses. This is where all cars entered their garages. Or do you all have too many cars now??The trees were never there of course, but they do look lovely.Jim you are doing a great job for us all. We are all so grateful. Grandchildren enjoying the journey too.We hope you've taken time off to have a rest.Love from all the families. Joan

Joan...I'm back!I must thank Viv on the Chiswick Forum who obtained this Ixus 500 camera for me from E-Bay some weeks back..after I had lost my previous one. I just have to click, click!click, and follow the technology taught to us by Peter Wright, Richard Jennings, Paul Allan and several others.Like everyone else, I have really enjoyed your story..and it is an absolute pleasure to follow your local trail..and this has given us all an opportunity to reflect on memories of times past. And these wonderful NEIGHBOURNET Websites and Forums have changed many of our lives too.So, it off to Feltham we go....and we're in the London Borough of Hounslow..as is Hanworth, Bedfont, Cranford,Heston, Osterley, Spring Grove, Hounslow, Isleworth, Brentford and dear Chiswick!!-----------------------------------------------------When this church steeple comes into view, opposite the Station...we know that Feltham High Street is not far away!--------------------------------------------------------------I'm sure you will remember this local landmark!  It seems to be no longer used as a Church..but as an Administration Office for "Hounslow Homes"..the council house arm of the Borough Council.--------------------------------------------------------236 can't be too far away and Joan and her family left here for Australia over 40 years ago!-------------------------------------------------------This is outside Number 236...looking back towards Feltham Town.

This is 236 High Street, Feltham in 1961. This is my Grandma visiting from Scotland. The house has certainly changed.Is the "pits' as I know it still there by the train line. Or is that housing.  June and I worked in Apex house for D.E.R - Domestic Electrical Rentals. I hear that's gone too.I'm still in shock with this incredible journey. from Australia. xxxxx

Nigel. Can't believe it. Greenacres is only 10 minutes from here. We used to shop at the Greenacres Shopping Centre. But now a bit closer to home at the Holden Hill Shopping Centre. Your sister would know 'Target' at Newton. I am a stone's throw away from it. I back on to Charles Campbell Secondary School north side oval. Also a stones throw away from the Paradise Hotel.

Nice photo's of Tailem Bend Nigel. Taken by your sister? I live at Paradise, 7kms from the Adelaide City Centre. Where does your sister live??  My brother Johnny and his wife live on Princes Highway, near the tennis courts. June and husband live just past the Primary school on the left (heading away from Adelaide). Michelle and her 2 sons live at the back of Tailem Bend near the bowling green. I think it’s only fair that some of us here should see a little of your background out there.You mention Michelle and June live out at Tailem Bend, ‘far away’ from Adelaide central indeed in UK terms, if not Australian:Right on the Murray River, and a rail and road junction as well – shades of Brentford!So where in Adelaide are you? My sister and her husband have lived all over Adelaide and I lose track of where they are at any one time. Currently they are pulling bits of their house down and repairing it!

  I can't believe it, you knocked on the door. How nice it was of the lady to let you take a photo of her. I'm so excited. My husband, Dean is here also. He also is enjoying this journey of memories with me. I am so happy and stomach is churning with excitement.  I do believe I can see a cement garage at the back still. If it is, then that is the one my dad put up not long after we moved there. The house is lovely, nothing to what I thought it would look like. I'm about to ring June again, then she can go around to my daughter's to view the photos. This is a never ending journey. How can we all thank you.Kind regards, Joan and family.

Jim the first photo looking towards the church on the left, was there or is there a pond or something down a sloping walkway?  Yes many a wedding I watched at that church. I refrained from taking my camera along this evening, Jim's 2nd celebratory event.He has said that he intends continuing this celebrating lark throughout the rest of the year, so any further assistance will have to be viewed as promissory only.Then again, I just know that he has a few things in store for you Joan!
