A view of Australia
For all our Australian Brentfordians, here’s a wonderful endorsement of your country from J M Coetzee, the great South African novelist. On 6th March 2006, Coetzee became an Australian citizen in which he said that, "I was attracted by the free and generous spirit of the people, by the beauty of the land itself and – when I first saw Adelaide – by the grace of the city that I now have the honour of calling my home."He is a tremendous author. Here is his Coetzee’s Nobel Prize speech; he chose to read from his book, ‘Foe’, on Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. He is a very reclusive and austere man, but all the better for that, I think he is mesmeric and embodies what is tremendous in good writing. This website www.listeningtowords.com is excellent for audio and video clips of some great lectures/speeches.
