Ordering a Pizza in 2010

There used to be a rather geeky get together in the centre of London every month I think, where you could swap Tesco Club cards and other similar items. This way a card used by a young single male could suddenly be used by someone shopping for a large family. The idea was to mess up all that lovely data that got gathered. I expect the companies have long since cottoned on but I find the idea rather attractive.

I don't think any of us could have known how these schemes would ultimately be used. It's green shield stamps with a rather sinister twist.

Fair point Andrew but when I signed up for it I didn't really think about the intrusive aspect of the scheme.I shop less and less there anyway.

At the end of the day we have become a society always on the lookout for a bargain. We are brainwashed into subscribing to the "club card" with its promise of free gifts and money off vouchers and willingly divulge our personal details without a thought to what they might be used for. By swiping our cards every time we go shopping we are simply allowing these people to build up a pretty comprehensive profile of our shopping habits and lifestyle. This information is then used to tailor the rewards that we receive. "Why can't they make things cheaper in the first place?". I think the term "nothing in life is free" comes to mind. At the end of the day someone has to pay for all these freebies so why not let the very same people that are rewarded for their loyalty pay. We could of course opt out of these schemes and not get any of these rewards but we would still be paying the same prices as those that do, therefor subsidising their free gifts. If we object that much to the way that we are being watched by these  organisatuions then we don't sign up. If we're not that bothered then we might as well get the rewards that we are ultimately paying for. It's our choice.

Gareth, I too fing it a bit spooky,and a little offensive,that Tesco aim particular offers at me or my wife. For instance,they give extra points at certain times of the month for womens' products,iykwim.Why can't they just make everything a little cheaper in the first place.

Not to mention schemes such as Tesco Clubcard through which Tesco know exactly what offers to aim at you.

PaulYes it is scary. But that what has been happening for years..people collecting masses of information from all kinds of sources...and having it there at their fingertips.The arrival of the postcode system was a great fillip for these information collectors..then with all the credit agencies keeping tabs on us too..the gas and electricity suppliers have all account holders names ..the Supermarkets etc now having reward Schemes..where shoppers spending records can be examined by the authorities if necessary..it is all a concern of sorts.Then some companies proceed to sell this information to others.  Your local pizza company will have a cyberspace will have a record of all your double-portions of your favourite dish..and a trawl of these Forums..will give you an insight into many of our lives.Any of course if you have a mobile phone..switched on or not..big brother may know where you are..all the time. Then there's Google Earth and no doubt it's refined versions!
