Enfield Road - Chip Shop

Now Audrey has bought up the question of a chip shop in Enfield Road, and a neighbour who is doing a history project on Enfield Road, has never heard of a chip shop? Fishmonger, yes, The Ditch, yes, (was Enfield Road East and now very smart Enfield Walk [the name] who does this?) So where was the Chip Shop, Jim kindly did a photo of the fishmonger on the corner of Grove Road, not the ditch, perhaps we could ask Jim to come back and do a photo of both sides of 'The Ditch' Enfield Walk taking both names, yes, the old one is still there.  And see what comes up, basically anyone who ever lived in Enfield Road? What number?  Who were the neighbours and who else do you remember? Who had a relative living there? etc.  Come back 10 4.  that dates me. So now I sit back and see!!Jo

I moved here in 1987 and think most of the shops had well gone by then.  However the amazing Mr Patel was here for many years.  He would let you run up a tab, didnt seem to have any paperwork, and would accurately let you know how much you owed .  Unfortunately his son, who was a very talented mountain climber, died of heart failure in his sleep (or something like that - sorry if I have got some of my facts wrong)in his late teens or early twenties.  After that tragic event Mr Patel sold up, and is now working at Heathrow Airport.  His shop was converted into flats.

There was also a hardware store on the corner opposite The Nelson, it's now converted into a garage.  The chap who lives there is the son of the original owner and is now our window cleaner. Junction Road had several shops in it too, all long gone. The bakers, Greens, was excellent and there was a butcher on the other corner (Len Bates), this is all dating me !

Hi,The Fishmongers was where now, No. 2 Enfield Walk is (The white cottage on the corner of Enfield Walk-Enfield Road) The shop used to be where now looking at the front door, was to the right.  The couple who owned the shop lived at the back.  When the couple passed away it was converted back into a cottage.When it was converted back into a cottage I brought it in 1986 and lived there for 3 years before moving around the corner into Avenue Road.  We brought 2 Enfield Walk for £45,000.00p and sold it for £96,000.00p.  I planted the roses and ivy around the kitchen window and also planted the now very large Fern tree in the front garden.When we lived there on the opposite side of Enfield Walk to us was a coal yard and Greengrocers run by an old guy named George who also lived in Enfield Road.I remember as a child going to the butchers 2 doors along from the greengrocers which was run by a mother and son.  It was your typical old fashioned butchers. The queues where always so long because he would chat to each customer for so long!  His mother used to sit in a little booth where you paid for your meat.  She also would not stop talking either!  I can still remember the sawdust on the marble floor.2 Doors along from that oppostite the Nelson was Mr Patel, the newsagent selling anything and everything.  He was renowned for letting customers build up bills, and never getting paid!  He always had the biggest smile on his face and was always laughing.I remember the morning I went to go to the shop to find that in the middle of the night there had been a fire caused by a faulty fridge and the shop was burnt to the ground. Can't believe Mr Patel was still smiling!  His son died (can't remember the circumstances) and they sold up and disappeared after that.Memories!..........Fran

Hi Doris. Next to Platts grocery was another Platts store, half butchers and wet fish and then next to that was Bests. Mr. Best was more like a doctor, we'd always ask his opinion before going to the doctor!

Audrey I do remember Platts the grocers, and I think the shop next door was a chemists or pharmacy but I do not remember the name of it.

Hi Jo; I stand corrected that it was a wet fish shop on the corner of The Ditch & Enfield Road. Pasche was the name. I'm remembering back in the 50's!! There was a general store near Eastbourne Road, I think you went up steps to enter. At the corner of Grove Road/Enfield Road was a store that sold parafin. Does anyone remember Platt's the grocers and also the wonderful pharmacy, Bests.
