"Excuse me, but what happened to the Royal Star and Garter on Richmond Hill"? Perhaps the following may be a good enough reason for this home to open! GULF WAR ILLNESSESThe Gulf war has been labelled the most toxic war in history. Prior to deployment, troops were subjected to a multiple immunisation programme of up to 14 vaccinations, followed by exposures to organophosphates and other pesticides, nerve agents, depleted uranium, environmental hazards, chemical weapons and smoke from burning oil wells. In spite of research in this country discounting most of these as the single cause of Gulf War illnesses, the Americans however are investigating the “cocktail effect” of these multiple exposures.GW vets are more than twice as likely to report symptoms of ill health, than their military contemporaries of equivalent age, gender, rank and branch of service. Symptoms fall into four categories: musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory and psychological. We don’t know how the Falkland, Iraq, and Afghanistan service people are going to react to their experiences, so I fully support SSAFA in their endeavours, along with the Star and Garter Home in Richmond. This may be the reason why SSAFA wishes to open a home with some of life’s luxuries, there are many, many more, who having fought for their country in many theatres of conflict, and suffer as a result, and deserve top class treatment IMO. But others may think differently, or the way this country is going don’t care anyway!
