White Ellar-phant Roof Collapses

I have just been advised that the roof of the Lampton Conference Centre has just collapsed and the space is now under a couple of inches of water. Could this be the opportunity the Council needs to provide a replacement swimming pool for the one Hounslow residents lost around 20 years ago?

I find the whole workings of the civic centre and political process, very unnerving.  Just who would be expected to manage the space after the decision to spend the £illion's on it?The Councilors may have an open job description to work 24/7 x 365 (no I won't repeat the bit about them being expected to install a fireman's pole, outside their house) but realistically they have to set up an operation resourced to fund and manage what has been allocated - so, who is in charge?

I don't think intelligence is something the Tories and Mini-tories have in abundance John.  Practical use of space should come easy to anyone with an ounce of sense.  Not this lot it seems.

Sarah, over 15 months ago the Tories said, if elected, they would scrap the Conference Centre. It was completed 10 months after the election and has sat empty ever since. I believe a competent leadership would have planned alternative uses for the space while it was being built rather than waiting until after it was completed. The empty space represents a criminal waste of council taxpayers' funds.If you visit Lampton Palace you will see a large sum of money is being spent upstairs in the Ante-Chamber constructing offices for the people taking part in the PIP efficiency exercise which is expected to run until Summer 2008. Surely it would have been more intelligent to use the space downstairs for this purpose rather than leaving it empty?

Like you, Vanessa, I surely hope that the roof is indeed guaranteeded so that it will not cost another 'tax payers bean' to mend it.  Forgive me but I am confused about the arguement around this subject.  Surely the new administration cannot be held responsible for the multi £illion building 'being there'? ...  Am I reading that there was an expectation that on 'day 2' they should have knocked it down?

As I understand it - part of this useless building is being used as a replacement staff canteen, another half hour and there could have been serious injuries when the roof caved in, let's hope it's still under some sort of guarantee.

What the Big Tories and the Little Tories do something about investment in sport John?  You're surely having a laugh?This borough is one of the worst and is progressibly getting worse with it's sports services and facilties. Satisfaction levels are amongst the lowest in London in the Active People Survey.I bet they think that Hillingdon and Ealing can take up the slack with their in investment in new swimming pools.Cue ICG's main mouthpiece coming on here and blaming this all on Labour when in fact they've done more harm in 15 months that Labour managed in decades with cuts in services. I bet you 10 quid he'll rant about this.
