Liked the pictures very much Edward. They seem to have a distinct aura...and style.I wonder how you attach the frame? Agreed Weymouth is a great place to visit.

I agree Edward there were some rough parts of the town and quite a few homeless and beggers about.I could nor believe it when I saw drunks diving of the bridge and no police anywhere to stop them.Still a great place to visit though in my opinion.

Duncan,No I did not sail on her this year but might do if I ever go back to Weymouth. Paul they have regular trips through out the summer I don't know when from though.This year I found that Weymouth has gone down hill quite a bit it seemed a lot dirtier than before and full of rough sleepers and general loutishness. Walk along the harbour past the Golden Lion and the other pubs and your feet stick to the pavements with all the spilt beer, and you seem to be knee deep in fag ends nobody seems to use any ashtrays out side. But at least the beeches are still well looked after.

I am sure we saw trips advertised for the Waverley when we were in Weymouth for the recent Bank Holiday and I wish I had taken a trip on her now,

Edward, that's a lovely photo of The Waverley, in calm waters and it looks like it is reversing out. At first I was perplexed by the wide part of the ship and then I realised it was a paddle steamer.Have you sailed on her?I see on their website:http://www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk/that there are some interesting sailings all around the UK, one I see comes up the Thames under Tower Bridge.The ship reminded me of some of Turner's paintings of paddle steamers:'Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth', 1842. This is in a bit stormier weather than yours!'The Fighting Temeraire', 1838. The paddle steamer tug has that distinctive wide shape. I found a few video clips on http://www.youtube.com . My Brother in Law and his Wife were supposed to be staying in The Olde Lyme Guest House but they had double booked! We did pop in the pub opposite a couple of times which I think was called The Ship.

Its a small world Keith as yes we also saw the Red Arrows,had dinner in the Cobb Arms and even went to visit Beer on the Sunday.You were not staying in the New Haven Hotel were you as well? !!

Paul, wife and I also in Lyme lifeboat week. Did you see the fabuluos Red Arrows display?I tried the yard of ale(mistake!)at The Cobb(raising funds for RNLI)and spilled more than I drank.Visited the quarry caves at Beer,which have been there since Roman times.Fascinating stuff.

News footage this evening of Gordon Brown on a holiday break in, wait for it Helen and Paul .. in Weymouth!  Wonder if he will let his boys crab fish off the pier?  The kiddies doing this on our visit were pulling in dinner plate sized ones!:-)

Sarah,Can you leave the sunshine there please so we can do some long walks along the coast to work up an appetite and a thirst. And yes you are quite right it is nice that they haven't got loads of fruit machine places.

Hi Sarah,fossils are not really my cup of tea but there did seem plenty of interest in them from the day-trippers.We went mackeral fishing on a small boat and ended up the only ones who did not catch any.A little boy of about 6 or 7 years old kept insisting we take two of his home as he had plenty.We had to give them back to his dad while the boy was not looking in case he got upset as we had nowhere to keep or cook them!Theres a few of us off to Weymouth in a couple of weeks for the August Bank Holiday so any tips you may have would be most welcome please?

Paul - did you do any fossil hunting?  As the cliffs fall away with every day erosion you can see some amazing fossils appearing.  Off Brook bay on the Isle if Wight there are some dinosaur footprints set into the rocks which can be seen at low tide.

Helen, it is a lovely area and apparently it thrives during the off season, as well.  I am so pleased it hasn't been damaged by too many game arcades/gambling shops it is almost unspoilt and quite charming.  Have a lovely stay - have you booked some good weather, too?  :-)

Sarah,I have just returned from a four day trip to Lyme Regis just down the coast from where you were and what a wonderful place it was.It coincided with their annual Lifeboat Appeal Week so there was plenty of activities going on including displays etc.

Sarah,Don't eat all the ice cream I am down there the first week of Sept staying in Helen Lane opposite the life boat station, hope the sun stays out for the third year running much better than being in the airport!

and it was so nice to see Punch and Judy again. My daughters live in Teignmouth which on the sea and they never get anything like that. It takes me back years to when I was a kid, watching old Mr Punch bang the living daylights out of the Mrs. Excellent

I'd forgotten about the seaside Sarah..such is life inland these days!Weymouth is a good choice as there is so much to do there. So thanks for the pictures.  One wonders how busy the Brentford Waterside festival will be tomorrow..not that British Waterways are this months favourite in TW8 town!

Hello Audrey.  The weather was warm and windy - a perfect sailing day should one own one of the many boats moored along the coast there!  The following is a picture of the Ferry off to Jersey.The activity all around the water must centre around the access to the water itself - which may be one of the things to consider in the Brentford development.  The piers are full of people out for a stroll, fishing, crab fishing, sailing, canoeing or just watching the other activity making up the scene.  This is Nothe Fort "Substantially complete Victorian coastal defence fort with 20thC modifications. Access to ramparts, gun decks, magazines, 70 rooms of dioramas, displays and exhibits relating to original use or historical perceptions of the area. Courtyard events are organised and temporary exhibitions mounted. Tea room, gift shop and picnic area. Superb views over town, harbour and Dorset Jurassic Heritage Coast. Overlooking sailing courses for 2012 Olympic Games."The views are spectacular.

Not the best angle for this photo but this is one of the new boats which can't turn turtle - it rights itself in 6.5 seconds.  This boat is 14 years old and on loan to Weymouth whilst their boat of 5 years is away at a boatyard on the Isle of Wight having a service.  Can't do without these boat yards - huge number of boats moored and in use in the estuary today.
