Strand Union Infant Establishment

I am asking for TW8's help again. Further to my research I have since found out that a relative from the 1901 census Frank ANGELL aged 14 years, was listed as a pauper in the Strand Union Infant Establishment, at Edmonton, Middlesex. Could anyone enlighten me to what sort of 'establishment' this could have been? Again I thank you for any information.Joan from Australia.

Tim, you certainly did hit the bullseye. What a fantastic site. It's given me a better understanding of how they lived. Quote "All paupers were required to wear a uniform and pauper's badge on their shoulder". How sad to be a 'pauper' in those days. And then this -Quote"The union therefore decided to accommodate able-bodied adults in the old Edmonton workhouse, with the former Hampstead parish workhouse being used for the aged and infirm, and children going to the former Enfield parish workhouse. The others were then disposed of".I don't like to think of how the 'others' were disposed of. My ancestry is really coming together.I have purchased a Family Tree program and I have spent hours/days putting it all together. TW8 has a big mention in my notes, my wonderful photographer JIM has a huge acknowledgement. TW8 forum members have been such a big part of my search. Another morning cuppa and back to reading. Hi JoanEdmonton, Middlesex these days is located within the London Borough of Enfield..where they do have a local history section..and that's helpful to know.Others may have some knowledge..or books on the subject..but for starters could I lodge this website page of Enfield Council.http://www.enfield.gov.uk/448/index448.htm
