Christmas Lights to Go Ahead

Brentford High Street Steering Group are delighted to anounce that Brentford will have Christmas lights this Christmas.  Following our appeal many firms in Brentford have kindly donated towards the Christmas lights and we at BHSSG are all absolutely delighted and extend our thanks to all who have helped.  The original scheme, although very ambitious, was planned to light up the whole High Street from Pets at Home through to the Watermans Art Centre.  Following negotiations we have managed to get the cost originally quoted reduced and money raised to date will allow us to light up key sections of the High Street.  Hopefully the whole scheme will happen during the course of the next few years.  The benefit of the chosen scheme is that we can easily add to it for years to come.We would still welcome any donations should anyone be interested in helping towards a very exciting Christmas here in Brentford.  Any donation small or large would be very much appreciated and your generosity will be acknowledged.  We are hoping to have a lighting up ceremony on Friday 30 November with lots of festive fun.Please contact Julia Quilliam 020 8847 4737.

Thought I would bump this after reading the front page article.Part reproduced below.The Brentford Chamber of Commerce are asking local residents to contribute to the cost of Christmas lights on the High Street this year. Whilst most of the traders in Brentford High Street have donated and generous donations received from the big companies in the area it was felt that the people of Brentford might like to get involved.Therefore if you would like to sponsor a light bulb for yourself or a member of your family or anyone in fact pop into the Grand Union Community Development at 191 High Street. Cost of a light bulb will be £10. Most of this charge will go towards the set up costs. However, all individual donators will be advertised in the shop and any other literature publish.

This is great news..thankyou Julia and all involved in lobbying for this.It would be good to have the 'Xmas trees for sale'sign opp.The Beehive removed after all this time.It really doesn't look too good.

As with all such things, it's a matter of generally accepted usage.The Brentford Chamber of Commerce insist on 'Brentonian', as do others. Then again, 'Brentfordian' seems to have wider circulation and is less ambiguous.'Brent' appears in several place names, but 'Brentford' less so. Google 'Brentonian' and you'll find more references relating to the Canadian 'Brentwood' than to anywhere else.I somehow doubt that the description has been set in stone anywhere at any time.

Well there is another prompt for me, Duncan.  My question is one for the Cllrs involved in planning applications along the A4.Historically the Golden mile was lit at Christmas and as money became more of the objective of land owners (seemingly) the decorations have not been protected as a part of the historical/environmental impact value of the planning application.Any chance of building this back into the tick list of considerations of planning applications for the area?  people came from far and wide to see the decorations - and the road is a major doorway to the capital.  People valued these decorations and looked for them every year.Any chance of an approach to the owners of the wall in front of the old Firestone's building which is where the Christmas trees used to go, to ask them to continue placing them fronting the A4?Previous discussion (one of many)http://nnet-server.com/server/app/forum/ShowMessage.asp?ID=105450Will there be decorations this year from the owners of the Gillette building or have the Christmas lights gone for ever?:-(

This is a photo I took of the understated and restrained touch of Christmas decoration at MSO Marine Construction, Dock Road. They also decorate the crane as well. I call this 'Pole Stars':Their decorations always put a pleasant smile on my face as I walk past. I have noticed recently that their business is thriving and looks a treat when you walk past. Good news. It would be good to see a large Christmas tree in the Market Place.Maybe the owners/developers of the derelict buildings could decorate the boarded up buldings with winter scenes?
