mcdonalds ad thingy.

just noticed maccie d's opposite the watermans have put up an 'ad hoc scaffold advertising structure'. A, it looks a bit naffB, i always think its a good thing to keep these chaps in thier place ;)does the general forum wisdom consider the structure to be worthy of a planning application, and did macdonalds get it before they put the thing up?

I noticed it the other day and would concur with the previous posts about its appearance.  However the sign may well benefit from deemed advertisement consent under Class 5 (or Class 6 if the car park is regarded as the forecourt of the premises) of Part 1 of Schedule 3 of the Town & Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) Regulations 2007, although interestingly the regulations don't define what is meant by a 'shop' - as if McDonalds is considered as a shop (which I don't think it should be) then the signs would definitely require express consent from the Council.  Assuming McDonalds is not a shop then consent wouldn't be required as long as :1) no part of the advertisement is more than 4.6 metres high.2) no character or symbol on the advertisement is more than 0.75 metres high.3) no single advertisement (if I recall correctly the McDonalds display contains several different advertisements) may exceed 1.55 square metres in area.I haven't measured the advertisements though.  If they comply with all the above tolerances & it is assumed that McDonalds isn't a shop then no formal application to the Council would be required as the advertisement can be displayed under deemed consent, if they do not comply then the advertisements are illegal.

Yes I noticed it the other day (on the way home from a week in the lovely Dorset countryside, which probably meant that my eye was more easily offended, sigh). It is absolutely foul and, due to the lego-like scaffolding approach, can easily be made larger by increments.

I do not recall it ever getting planning permission at an Area Committee meeting and I would very much doubt that our Planning Officers would have done so under delegated powers.
