Canvey Island is on "Flood Watch" at present, implying that they don't expect the water to flood more than low-lying land and roads, i.e. not property, and perhaps no flood at all. The nearest tide gauge at Coryton, just upstream from the island, is showing 0.73 metres above prediction, which is not too bad. The flood defences were raised along the estuary after the 1953 floods, and again when the barrier was built.
