Satellite Dishes

Can someone perhaps enlighten me.I live in Cedar Court and I would like to get Sky (Virgin media is for me rubbish) and have been told that i must get planning permission to put up a dish, does that sound right or not?I am a homeowner and not a tenant

Although I used to, I don't actually work for Hounslow Council now, so am unable to answer whether the other people applied - although as explained in my earlier post it could be that those dishes, being installed first, did not require planning permission.If any Council establishes that a breach of planning control has occurred, under Section 172 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 the Council has to consider the expediency of taking enforcement action, having regard to the provisions of the adopted Unitary Development Plan and all other material planning considerations.  If the Council considers that it is expedient to take action, an enforcement notice can be served (against which there is a right of appeal to the Secretary of State) requiring steps to be taken to remedy the breach or the harm caused.

May I ask whether the other people with satellite dishes in this block, applied for the relevant planning permissions? If not, what actions are likely, if any, to be taken against them?Seems to me that sometimes the way ahead is to just do it!  Of course I could be wrong (but I bet I'm not) but I doubt anyone who has a satellite dish has asked anyone's permission to put it up.  Lets face it, drawings and plans and application forms, what a palaver!

Sadly, to make a planning application to install a satellite dish the fee is £135, because under the regulations it is treated the same as an application for domestic extensions etc.  You'd need to submit the relevant application forms together with appropriate drawings/plans & the fee, a decision is usually made with 6-8 weeks of the application being validated.  You can pop into the Civic Centre without an appointment every weekday afternoon to see a Duty Planning Officer who would be able to help you go through the progress, or if you have specific questions you can pm me through this site.

Adamthank you for that.There are three dishes that i can see at cedar court currently and it is a two storey building, so i guess that I need planning permission after all.Is it an expensive and long process?Niel

In a conservation area, a satellite dish on a house requires planning permission if it is installed on a wall that fronts a highway, so in that regard what you were told is correct.  It is not however 'illegal', it is a breach of planning control rather than a criminal offence, a breach of planning control only becomes 'illegal' if a Council serve an enforcement notice against that breach & the enforcement notice isn't complied with.

Can anyone tell me the rules regarding satellite dishes being on the front of a house facing the road in a conservation area..I have been told it is illegal and a neighbour has recently put one in this position.

Part 24 of the The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995 was amended in late 2005 relating to satellite dishes & the position is as follows :If the building that forms Cedar Court is under 15 metres high, up to 2 satellite dishes can be installed under permitted development (i.e. without requiring planning permission), with one dish not more than 1.0 metres in diameter & the second dish not more than 0.6 metres in diameter.  Neither dish can be above the roof unless there's a chimney, in which case neither dish can be above the height of the chimney.So if there's already two satellite dishes on the building that comprises Cedar Court or the dish you want to install is larger than those tolerances then technically you would require planning permission.  The legislation is different in relation to buildings over 15 metres high, but I didn't think Cedar Court was that high ?.Hope that helps.

In theory I think it is correct - but the cynic in me says that most people don't bother and the Council hasn't the resources to keep track!
