HATTON v MAYWEATHER

Hard luck Ricky.This really was the classic "FIGHTER v BOXER" match.Even though Ricky kept coming forward and had Mayweather in a little trouble early on,as the fight progressed Mayweather kept his jab going and caught Ricky with a punch "right on the button".There was no shame in losing to a man with the record Floyd Mayweather has,he is truly a great  World Champion.I think Ricky should stick to Light Welterweight it seemed Welterweight is a step up too far.                  WELL DONE RICKY BRITON IS PROUD OF YOU !

Yes Andrew,they were certainly hard men back then.The Rocky Marciano v Don Cockell fight was as brutal as they come,but nearly all Marciano's fights were !!!We must remember though training techniques diet e.t.c have all changed over the years and the fighters are fitter than they were years ago.Also of course the safety of the sport has much improved.

We're doing pretty well in Boxing at the moment. Joe Calzaghe is a class act and watch David Hay once he moves up to his natural weight in the heavyweight division. He is a world champ in the making - even though it may not mean too much as the heavyweights are particularly weak at the moment. Andrew's comments brought back some memories as I met Terry Downes a few times. My mum worked in one of his betting shops in Slough during the '60's and he visited on a regular basis.

MarkI agree, well worth the £15, AND FEELING KNACKERED the next day. I have been following boxing going back to the days of the Browm Bomber, Joe Louis treated so badly by the yanks.And the Welshman Tommy Farr, robbed of the title by the "long count" I also well remember the Freddie Mills v Gus Lesnovich and Randolph Turpin v Sugar Ray Robinson fights. Although Ricky is a great fighter, I don't think he compares to Mills or Turpin though! The other scrapper that comes to mind is Terry Downes whe toughened up in the American Marine corps, he fought for and won the world middleweight title from the american Paul Pender in the 60's, do you remember these Jim?

It was also great to see Joe Calzaghe win the BBC's Sports Personality Of The Year.At last after ten years being an undefeated World Champion Joe got the recognition he deserves.I really hoped he would do it even though Lewis Hamilton was the red hot favorite to win.Hamiltons time will come,hes young and destined for greater things.If he had won the F1 Drivers Championship maybe he might have won.However,to be an undefeated World Champion for ten years in the toughest sport of all Joe is a worthy winner.
