Following a thread on the Ealing forum, can you name the film from which this famous line comes:"Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye."

Wow! I thought there'd be a more obscure answer than that. Still, you can see what he means. It's that quiet, reasonable tone with the underlying hint of menace. I can still remember the chilling effect when HAL refers to a mistake it has made as "human error." Scary stuff!

You got it Mick. In a recent interview with Jonathon Woss, Sir Anthony Hopkins said that when he auditioned to read lines for Silence of the Lambs he mimicked HAL's voice and the director loved it.. Agree too that Cox was brilliant in Manhunter but I still prefer Hopkins.

Couldn't agree more. Brian Cox is a superb actor and his Hannibal was brilliant. I also thought Alan Arkin's Inspector Clouseau was better than Peter Sellers.

Not sure on that one, although Anthony Hopkin's "Hannibal Lecter" voice in "Silence of the Lambs" had a bit of HAL about it!
And which British actor 'copied' HAL'S voice for a film which catapulted him to Hollywood and world-wide fame?
2001: A Space Odyssey. 1968 !
