Spring arrives early

My goodness it feels like Spring already. I've just had a walk in Kew Gardens today and the flowers are starting to come out. This mass of crocuses is behind the Palm House:These crocuses are coming up everywhere, under the Hornbeam:on the paths:and amongst dried up last year's leaves:The daffodils are out as well:It makes you feel good.

It was another glorious day yesterday at about 14 degrees, and the daffodils were out in Syon Park:I wondered if this sign in their car park, was for the tall grasses or for the cars!:Today we have reverted to a cold 5 degrees, but the flowers make it look warmer.

Duncan I haven't seen this as yet - TV programme on BBC2 at the moment called 'Around the world in 80 Gardens', in which Monty Don is visiting 80 of the world's most celebrated gardens.Years ago in Adelaide, it was popular to own a real 'English Country Garden' but the weather wasn't kind to some plants and didn't survive.  But with this drought, garden centres are at last promoting Australian Native plants, which will survive drought conditions. We went to Kew last Saturday and it was lovely and so busy for the time of year, very warm for February.When we came home we looked down on Richmond Weir and the road alongside, there must have been 2 dozen cars down by the river, flooded by the high tide.

I lived in Lionel Road until moving to Canada in 1981.  We are in the midst of our winter here in Ontario at the moment. Snow, snow and more snow with -14 degrees celcius today. I will be visiting my Mum in Ealing in May and am hoping to take a walk around Kew Gardens.  I used to go there regularly, its a wonderful place.

Thanks for the lovely photos Duncan. I feel as though I have had a walk in Kew Gardens, and it is Spring already!    Your Spring is a little earlier than ours on the Oregon Coast. We have had a much colder Winter than normal and my bulbs are only a couple inches high. I did see one solitary daffodil blooming in a neighbour's garden this morning when I walked the dog.

Joan, we have a TV programme on BBC2 at the moment called 'Around the world in 80 Gardens', in which Monty Don is visiting 80 of the world's most celebrated gardens. Last week I saw the programme on Australia and New Zealand http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/tv_and_radio/aroundtheworld_index2.shtml#programme_twoand they said that some gardeners in Australia are now turning to the natural plants which can better thrive in drought conditions. Do you see this in your gardens?It is a good TV programme, maybe they will show it over in Australia.Here are a few more photos of Springtime in Kew Gardens for you, to keep you going until the rains come!And even the Henry Moore sculpture objects to the aircraft noise:
