how many pubs does Brentford have?

Depends what you count as a pub - my list which also came to 19 excluded clubs and wine bars e.g. Copacabana and the Old Fire Station.

According to the story on the homepage our noble little parish,per capita,is awash with alehouses.The count is 19,but I thought the figure was more like 24 or so.

A picture of the Red Lion and (new) Red Lion is shown on page 62 of the book Brentfords Past by  Gillian Clegg which is available in Brentford and other Hounslow libraries.  There is also a book on Brentford pubs.

It remains to be seen how many of this list survives the year due to the smoking ban although personally I can't really say that the pubs I visit are any less busy if anything it is the opposite.

Does the Kings Arms count as a pub? - I've always thought of it as a guest house with a bar. Not that I have been in it.

Glad to hear that. Beamish is a fine stout- much superior to Murphy's.But being a Kerryman myself, I prefer Guinness. Nothing personal, you'll understand.

Been in the Express afew times, I'd certainly agree that it's civilised, just a little too 'dull' for my liking - but it's impossible to please everyone.  Can't believe I'm a snob - born & raised in Grimsby/Cleethorpes (both places I find far more intimidating & threatening than anywhere in London), over 70 years family heritage of working class fish merchants, spent 4 years in Sheffied where I was always in my down to earth, friendly, decent local boozer.

I must be turning into a snob but I have to say that with the exception of The Weir I wouldn't ever think of popping in any of Brentford's pubs out of choice.  I do go to most of those on the list once or twice a year as part of a pub crawl or socials with ex-work colleagues but my impression is always the same - the pubs are either virtually deserted, populated by weird old men, or full of the local Fosters drinking/football shirt wearing lads & ladettes.  So I always end up turning left when I leave home & local wise going to either the Bell on Crown in Strand on the Green or one of the pubs near Kew Green, where I find the atmosphere & the clientele far more welcoming and non-threatening.  Then again my 'local is a bar on Fulham Road in Chelsea, make of that what you will ;-)

I thought the Bricklayers had closed and also possibly the Pottery Arms?The Copacabana is a nightclub and falls in to the same catagary as the Fire Station I reckon ;-)
