Bottled Water

I was watching Watchdog Last night and they reported "Again" on Bottled water and do we need it when we have Water coming from our taps.Several Councils and Government Dept's in London have stopped purchasing Bottled water and using Tap Water saving Tax payers in there Area Thousands of Pounds.My Question is: Does the Civic center Use Bottled Water and if they do couldn't they save Tax Payers Thousands by Going back to the Tap??

None Paul..I was watching a Report on Watchdog regarding how much we spend on Bottled water when we have Pure Water in our taps..Also the effect the Plastic Bottles have on our Environment.On the Programme a Cllr from another Part of the country said that at Her Council they have done away with the Bottled Water and they use the Water from the Taps saving Tax Payers in her area Thousands a year which is spent on other Projects.Thats Why i was asking Paul..Hope Ive answered your Question.

Out of pure curiousity Simon,why the interest in the Civic Centre drinking water?

Simon,It is a legal requirement that the council provides the facility of drinking water for it's employees. Given that there are hundreds of people working at the civic centre alone, it makes sense to have these water dispensers at certain locations throughout the building, thus cutting down on the time it takes for people to go to the nearest tap. As Paul says, these machines are quite cheap to run. The council could invest thousands of pounds putting in new taps to replace these machines, causing a great deal of disruption to the staff in the affected areas, but I suspect the cost would be more than that of using the water dispensers already in place. Personally I think the council should be spending it's time on things like collecting the £1.2 million in unpaid council tax.

I dont think we should deny the staff clean drinking water especially in this weather Simon and besides it would cost an absolute fortune to install drinking water taps throughout the Civic Centre.Also,most office enviroments have these machines and the cost is very low so I fail to see why they should have to walk to the nearest kitchen everytime they get thirsty.

The drinking water supplied to meetings is tap water, and is provided in jugs.  However, there are also some cold water machines that have the large "upside down" bottles to supply them.  The Council does not provide small bottled water except in vending machines or in the restaurant for sale.

I can confirm that all meetings I attend have tap water only though I do recall seeing a water machine somewhere in the building once.
