!00 service people now killed in Afghanistan

While sitting outside in the sun today in Hounslow High street, my wife gave me the newspaper she had just brought, the front page showed the latest three who were killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. At the same time the Chinese man who plays Chinese music on a strange instrument, and at the exact time that I gazed at the pictures of these brave young men he started playing "Amazing Grace", it was very emotional, and although embarrassed I cried unashamedly at the waste of their lives! May God bless and keep them.I was in favour of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but now know I was completely wrong, and had not given much thought to those who would lose their loved ones in the process, I salute each and every one of them, alongside condolences to their families

Four more of our people have been killed today, one of whom is the first woman killed in Afghabistan. Meanwhile Abu Qatada has been released from prison and will now cost the taxpayers £500.000 a year for security, notwithstanding the £1000 a month in benefits for him. Welcome to the land of the Human Rights Act (for the criminal fraternity) and not forgetting the Lisbon Treaty........didn't the Irish reject it? At least they had a vote! By the way, has anybody seen the other Abu, a certain Mr Hamza?

I read that one of the brave young men who died last week was from just up the road in Staines.All our troops deserve our full support regardless of politics in my opinion and the do-gooders most of whom have never had a job in their lives who abuse them when they return on leave should be ashamed.

Five more heroes return to our land today in Union flag draped caskets, meanwhile the SWC are demonstrating in the city. Yes, as I have said before, the Iraq war was totally wrong, after initially supporting it! The war in Afghanistan is a different matter though IMO' it is a breeding ground for terrorists, as some of the so called "British citizens" who have gone out there from here to train can verify. Have we forgot the intolerance of the Taliban who wished to take the country back a thousand years, women not allowed to be educated stripped of their human rights, in some instances taken to a stadium and shot in the back of the head, while the men go unpunished for the the same crime of...adultery, children not allowed to fly kites, listen to music, the list goes on. Can anybody defend that way of life?Through the efforts and sacrifice of our service peoples lives, the Afghans have the chance for a better future, and to withdraw our troops from there now, would mean a betrayal to those who died out there would mean that they have died in vain. As usual, we are taking the brunt of the  burden along with the yanks, meanwhile the Germans are having a reasonably cushy time down in the South, nice to have supportive allies don't you think?

I had the pleasure of umpiring a cricket match last Saturday involving a team of ladies from the RAF. My fellow umpire was also serving in the RAF. It was inevitable that the war in Iraq/Afghanistan would be discussed at some point, but what amazed me was the way in which these people spoke about it. At least half of the ladies were due to be posted to Iraq within the next few weeks and the way they were talking you would have thought they were just doing an average 9-5 job. The umpire was telling me that he had already done 2 "tours" to Iraq, the last one being late last year which meant him being away from his family for Christmas and Easter. His attitude was "that's the way it goes in the RAF sometimes".Like you Andrew, I was misled into thinking that the war in Iraq was right. I am now firmly against it. However I firmly believe that we should back the men and women that are currently serving in our armed forces 100%. They are some of the bravest, yet modest people I have met.

Agreed Andrew. It's a long slog in Afghanistan(far longer than WW2)with no real end in sight.It has always puzzled me how we shoot at terrorists over there but give them houses and benefits here at home.I echo your sentiments and as far as the point of the war,as I understand it,being to support a democratic govn.,curtail the heroin trade and to stop Al-Quada getting cosier with the Taliban,I wonder if we have taken too much on considering the small number of troops the international community has sent there.
