THE WEIR...MY GOD !!!

I went into The Weir yesterday,I was the only one in the place and stood at the bar minding my own business reading my book.After about an hour as it approached 18.00hrs a woman who I assumed was the manager came over to me and said..."Can you sit down as we are putting the dinner menus out !!!" I couldnt believe what I was hearing ! I said "No." But when the "Menus" eventually turned up they were not leather bound extensive ones but A4 pieces of paper spread out on the bar ! As there are no stools around the bar I assume they dont want people at the bar.Of course there are no signs up saying this, and to be told "Can you sit down" quite frankly is a bloody cheek.

Youre speaking too much common sense Lydia !!!...That probably wouldnt have entered their head.And as for standing at the bar being intimidating, standing at the end of the bar minding my own business reading a book..that must have been "very intimidating !!!"

Some pubs don't like customers standing at the bar as they believe it may put others off from approaching the bar - it can look imtimidating apparently.  You would have thought however that they would want to save the tables for customers who were eating.

My husband went there a couple of years ago and was told he was barred because he had the cheek to be wearing a baseball cap and then the person he was with asked if they could turn the music up. The cheek of it.

There were certainly no signs saying you couldnt stand at the bar Steve...anyway I for one wont be venturing in there again.

I was in there that night Mark, I thought you looked a bit grumpy, not surprising! I've had a beer there a couple of times and I've always thought that they were a bit tight with the cheery smiles, perhaps they cost extra!I wonder if anyone representing the Weir would like to comment or perhaps list the rules and regulations for customers. Maybe a sign outside, 'no caps, blokes or standing at the bar making the place look untidy!' Maybe we should just stick to 'the Tap'.

Thanks for the info Mark - and as "Brentford has more pubs per person than any where else in the world"  there is plenty of choice so it would appear from your experience that the Weir is one to avoid!?

My main complaint Bill was the rudeness of the staff and the total lack of a friendly atmosphere.And judging by the replies to this post most people agree with me.

All fine Bill, but although it may well be a "gastro pub" now they do seem to have something against people who just want a drink. I have only been in the pub once and recieved the same sort of service as Mark. It is not a very welcoming place.

Outrage! A pub in Brentford has audacity to offer decent food. This is a disgrace. No-one in Brentford should be able to have access to good food.Shock! There are actually people in Brentford willing to buy champagne. This is unacceptable. People in Brentford should be either poor or mean, or both.Disgrace! This ridiculous public house does not even laminate their menus. The people of Brentford cannot order food from paper. In Brentford quality = faux leather binders.Horror! I passed this establishment one evening and there actually many customers. People who had bought drinks. People who seemed to be happy. These are clearly not citizens of Brentford. Send them back. And more worrynig, this may even imply that the business will not fail. I am disgusted.Disgust! Reading the fine contributions to this forum I found a long series of notes on how Brentford has more pubs per person than any where else in the world. How then do we allow this one establishment, this so called Weir, to stray from the tried and trusted model of being a "decent boozer". What happened that anyone thinks Brentford can accommodate anyhting other than a single model for a pub when we only have more of them than anywhere else?

Thanks for the info.  They just don't get it do they? And when their business fails miserably they wonder why!Being rude to customers, charging £42.50 for champagne and £8.50 for cheese and then using but A4 pieces of paper as menus - lost the plot or what?

I agree with both Paul and you Mick.I just thought my experience was damned right rude of the woman,how dare she walk over to a customer and say "Can you sit down" after I had been standing at the bar for well over an hour.However,as I was on my own for the majority of that time drinking Strongbow maybe they dont want that type of drinker in there.But of course just before I left the "New Brentford" crowd started to drift in...Two women ordered a bottle of champagne at £42.50,cheese board with grapes at £8.50...and artichokes !!!...I must admit I didnt catch how much the artichokes were priced at but by that time Id seen and heard enough !!!

I used to drink in The White Horse regularly some 15-20 years ago and in those days it was a really friendly place to go. It sometimes got a bit boisterous (it was the watering hole of choice of the local CID at the time after all) but was always worth a visit and the lunchtime food was great!I must admit I was a bit sad when it became a gastro-pub and went up-market. There aren't too many traditional pubs left any more!

Oh, and I forgot to add that last summer a friend of mine and his father-in-law (my friend 60yrs and his father-in-law 80yrs+) went in The Weir for lunch with their wives wearing baseball caps.My friend and his father-in-law were told they could not be served as they were wearing baseball caps !!! What a joke !

Not a pub I would ever rush to at all as it takes an absolute age to get served even when very quiet.Far too much emphesis on food in my opinion
