Local Debit and Credit Card Cloning ?

Just a word of warning; three people have contacted us at our estate agency in the last ten days saying that their credit and debit cards have been used in the states, Canada or Pakistan after using their cards (in a retail outlet or at a cash machine). Just wondered if this has happened to anyone else?  Thankfully it was the banks that contacted the rightful owners before the moneys were taken out of the account!

We are getting more reports of local cards being cloned.  Is cash the way to go?

My debit card got cloned at a motorway/autoroute toll booth in France 2 weeks ago, within hours it had attempted to be used in Pakistan, unsuccesfully as it happens as the Nationwide noticed something was odd and refused payment. According to the Nationwide motorway toll booths here (Birmingham expressway) and in Europe are notorious for cloning cards - advice was to use cash.

All I can suggest is - don't use your cards in petrol stations

This card cloning is scary.  What simple precautions should we take when using our debit/credit cards?  We're soon to be travelling to Malaysia and Singapore, where most shops and hotels tend to prefer customers to use cards rather than cash. I'm getting a bit paranoid about travelling these days, especially when we can't have access to your good old reliable Marks&Spencers and John Lewis outlets.  :-(

Just received a call from the bank to inform me that my debit card has been used in the states for travel & insurance.  My card has now been cancelled, - how annoying.
