Msg for Mr Calvi-Freeman re; Brentford High Street

ChrisNow that the water mains work has moved on slowly down towards Half Acre in Brentford do you think Highways can ask for the pedestrian crossing lights outside the Premier Inn Hotel to be reinstated please? It's quite dodgy crossing the road there at the moment and there's no alternative crossing point. Thanks

I completely agree Philip.  I have made that point a number of times over the last 20 years.  DockRoad is used by the residents of Brentford Dock (1000 people) to access Somerfields or access 237/267 Chiswick/Hammersmith buses.  There are many over-70/80 year olds who attempt to cross at this point without the safety of a pedestrian crossing. I notice traffic eastwards accelerates here as they exit traffic lights.  Similarly traffic westbound comes at a high speed to beat the lights.  I've seen an overturned car here and there was a moped rider killed here 3 yrs ago.

Ken if you think thats a dodgey crossing point you should try the one by the County court. It has a bus stop strategically place to obscure it on the other side of the road. My duaghter used to go to Brentford Girls school and its pupils risk life and limb to use that crossing, as the bus they get of hides them as they start to cross the road. One day someone will die on that crossing and it will most likely be a child on her way to that school after having got off her bus at that stop.

The lights this morning had moved back from Half Acre to almost outside the Premier Hotel again...maybe they 'missed' abit ?!

Thanks for the response Chris though I am dissappointed and am not so sure I agree with Adam's point either. There are rarely, if ever, queues backing up to the hotel at peak times now as the works are about 150 yards away. In fact the works are a lot closer to the lights at Half Acre, so if we extend the same considerations or logic then can we expect the Half Acre lights to be switched off? Crossing near the works is dangerous. Motorbikes etc whizz up the inside or outside of traffic. At least the lights gave us a chance.

As Chris alludes to I'd have thought it wouldn't be at all safe to re-introduce the traffic lights outside that hotel yet, it would cause chaos at peak times as traffic heading east would soon back up to within where one lane of the carriageway is completely blocked off, and cause gridlock.

KenEach partial road closure has an agreed traffic management plan to balance traffic flows and accessibility while maintaining safety.  A pelican crossing operating in close proximity to temporary lights could be confusing and hazardous, which may be the reason if has not yet been reinstated as the works have progressed westwards.I have forwarded this to the Highways section as they monitor the contractors' progress and they will ascertain when the pelican lights can be reinstated  I will be away on shortly.  Any queries of this nature should be sent to highways@hounslow.gov.uk or phone 020 8583 5555.Chris Calvi-FreemanHead of TransportLondon Borough of Hounslow
