Traumatic scene at Strand on the Green

Does anybody know what happened to the poor, distraught soul who tried to commit suicide by jumping into the river on 23rd? The River Survey Boat happened to be in the area and bravely and ably prevented the awful and inevitable, which the man was seeking, from happening. When the River Rescue team arrived they took over and were able to get him to the Pier near Kew Bridge where the Police and paramedics were waiting. It really was a surreal scene to behold, that of a man fighting so hard not for his life but for his demise, which stopped people who were enjoying the sunshine and the river, in their tracks. It left so many people in shock and no doubt many of us view our lives as that much more precious.

Yes, in future please refrain from any "suicide attempts" or "cries for help" and just get on and expire somewhere quietly so no one is inconvenienced. A cry for help or an attention-seeking gesture does not indicate that one is genuinely in need of, er, help or attention but is merely self-indulgent. The only suicide attempt worthy of being taken seriously is a successful one. Apparently.

I understand that this guy must have been going through some crap times but i think jumping off a bridge is taking it to far. I have read and been told that he waited for the emergency services to be there when he jumped. This indicates to me he didnt really want to jump or die. If he was that serious about it he would have done it where nobody could have saved him and not in broad daylight. I really dont understand how you could get upset.I think he only jumped because he knew the emergency guys were there to pull him out and it made for a good story.

Dear oh dear, and so we play to stereotype and vent our spleens from a position of relative comfort and safety. I say again I DO NOT wish to gain any 'entertainment' from this unfortunate incident. I was there throughout the incident, which believe you me, was traumatic. My original post was to seek some indication and assurance that the guy lived. To have witnessed a possible death is a hard number, particularly for my friend who has been having nightmares about it. I do not seek nor derive any pleasure from you sharing your unsympathetic comments with me with regard to someone's else's pain. So please lets be adult about this and stop now. Thank you.

Without wishing to make sport out of this man's unfortunate situation I can only agree with Anne Parish's sentiments. Thank whichever faith or persuasion one has, that we never have to go through whatever demons he was facing.

Trouble is with people like that, when they jump under trains and off bridges onto motorways they don't think of the inconvenience they cause to everybody else.

Thanks Philip, I hope you are right and that all is well with the poor bugger.  We were at the Bell and Crown too at the time and I know my friend was truly effected by the scene. It would be good to pass on some reassurances that the suicide bid was unsuccessful.

According to eye witnesses at the Bell and Crown the man waited for the emergency services to arrive before jumping in, so I wouldn't stress to much. It would appear to have been an attention seeking moment.
