Should we even try?

Given the 5 hour opening ceremony of the Olympics and concerns of 'how do you follow that' - should we even try? It seems to me to contemplate spending millions just trying to outdo the previous hosts is futile. Personally I think we should just get the Queen, decked out in the Crown Jewels in the Coronation coach, along with some very smart marching Guardsmen, to cut a ribbon and declare the games open. After all the Olympic Games are supposed to be about sport and friendship not expensive beanos. Understated and dignified would be nice.

Who better than Vicky Pollard to open up with flicking a cig but into a full rubbish bin...we have enought football thugs who would be delighted to help out as volunteers...now what could we have as a national sport..

Yes Vannesa nice to see them crying in their 'Fosters'.Would you believe it though, a Government Minister ,Gerry Sutcliffe, actually predicting that GB would get 41 medals and getting it spot on!He must have done his homewok, and maybe, just maybe we have a peg in a hole that fits. He must be the most successful Minister since Dennis Howell was appointed Minister for the Drought in 1976, and in less than a week it rained and rained and the Drought was broken.Maybe Gerry should be appointed Environment Minister, and then everything would fall into equilibrium, and Arcadia would be ours!

Wise words yesterday from Seb.Coe, I have no objection to money being spent on athletes and supporting their training and facilities, but so glad something more modest will be seen in London in 2012 regarding ceremony. All the competitors have really done us proud this time, just shows what some proper investment will produce. And of course the icing on the cake is the Aussies having a whinge!

"and flanked by a couple of black cabs.;-)"Not a good idea - from my experience the black cabs would probably get lost :-)After recently taking a total of 23 cabs in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong which was an absolute pleasure I arrived back at Heathrow and tried to catch a black cab to Isleworth."Can you give me a clue where that is? "  the black cab driver asked aggressively"Don't you have Satnav?" I asked tentatively  "Nope""OK - do you know the London Road?"  - "Nope" he said"What about Hounslow bus station?" - "Haven't a clue mate" was the answer. "OKaaaaay - what about Gilletes Corner?"  -  "Nope""Twickenham Rugby Ground?"  - "Nope - I don't follow rugby" was the answer."OK - if you can find your way out of the airport - I'll guide you all the way"  "OK mate but you'll have to speak up as I can't hear to well from the front of the cab and you have got to understand that I have been doing this job for 21 years and I am a Londoner so I don't  usually have to go to these out of the way places.  And put your foot on your suitcase 'cos its rocking around in the back of my cab" !!!!

I think when it comes to Pomp and Circumstance we cannot be beaten, but given some of the old farts who run sport in this country, and the bureaucrats in charge of the 2012 games I'm not sure I would trust any of them not to make complete twerps of us all. The Queen on the other hand, can always be relied upon not to put a foot wrong.
