Thames Water works affecting Windmill Rd then Ealing Rd

Thames Water’s Victorian water mains replacement programme continues:30 March to 15 May 2009Replacement of water mains in Windmill Road from its junction with A4 Great West Road to the junction with Murray Road. During this time Windmill Road will be made one-way northbound. Traffic will be able to enter Windmill Road from the A4 but all southbound traffic will be diverted via Little Ealing Lane, South Ealing Road and Ealing Road and A4. Any traffic exiting from the side roads into Windmill Road will have to turn north and follow the diversion. Minor changes will be made to the traffic signal timings to cater for the additional traffic that will be using Ealing Road. Waiting and loading restrictions will also be introduced alongside the works area to ensure the northbound traffic can flow unhindered.1 June to 17 July 2009Replacement of water mains in Ealing Road from its junction with A4 Great West Road to the junction with Occupation Lane. Changes will be made to the traffic signals timings on the A4 to cater for the additional traffic that will be using Windmill Road, and a new right-turn phase will be introduced at the Popes Lane / South Ealing Road junction to make it easier for traffic to turn from South Ealing Road into Little Ealing Lane. Waiting and loading restrictions will be introduced alongside the works area to ensure the northbound traffic can flow unhindered. Also, some restrictions will be required on Windmill Road to ensure that the diversion route is clear of any obstructive parking.Some delays are expected to occur on the diversion routes, but with a combination of widespread advance warning signs and changes to the signal timings it is hoped that these will be kept to a minimum.________________________________________________ Chris Calvi-FreemanHead of TransportLondon Borough of Hounslow

My original impression was nothing to do with your delivery/presentation Chris - I'm just not usually the biggest 'fan' of bus lanes and had false visions of chaos etc !.

Thanks Adam.  Nice of you to say.  I think I can remember presenting the initial report.  The benefits at that time were assessed as very strong but perhaps my delivery wasn’t too polished on that occasion.  Observations since completion of the scheme actually show bigger benefits than originally estimated.

I was driving back down through Ealing from the A40 earlier this afternoon and when I got stuck in the queue from South Ealing Station approaching the lights at the junction with Popes Lane I was only thinking how there always seems to be heavy congestion there no matter what time of the day !.On a separate note congrats to Chris re. the London Road bus improvement award - I don't mind admitting that I was also presenting reports to the Area Committee when Chris presented the suggested bus lane and I was rather unimpressed with the proposal, I guess that's why Chris is the transport expert and I'm a town planner ;-)

Many private schools have broken up for Easter and this always affects the traffic. State schools break up this week.

Everything seemed to flow nicely today, even in the morning rush hour and the school run this afternoon. There does seem to be remarkably little traffic today though.

JamesThe diversion plans were agreed some time ago between Thames Water and the Council.I believe the signed diversion routes are Ealing Road and Boston Manor Road while Windmill Road is restricted to one way northbound traffic.I believe Thames Water have leafleted the area.

Chris,Radbourne Avenue, Junction Road and Enfield Road should be southbound-only for the duration of the works, otherwise there will be gridlock on the surrounding streets.Do you know whether there is a plan to do this? Otherwise, is it too late to implement it now?
