Did anyone notice numbers of police last Saturday

I went to Brentford station last Saturday about 3pm. There were 20 policemen/women on platform 2, 2 large police vans in the car park with about another 18 police and maybe dogs. Coming back we were delayed west of Hounslow station for about 15 minutes, the guard said something to do with the police. When we arrived at Hounslow station there was a large number of police on the platform. Does anyone know what was going on?

Thanks Neil - that makes sense. I suppose they were waiting for the first few trains from London which arrived after kick-off.

Regards the timing I suspect that the Police were waiting to see if any Luton "fans" were intending to cause trouble in the town when the match was on. Its an old trick, wait till the fans are all inside and then attack a local pub. Rumours had been flying for weeks on the net that Luton would cause trouble.

I did wonder about the football but this was after 3pm. Also, I heard one of the PC's radios saying something about a train just leaving Kew Bridge. I was expecting they might board the train to look for someone but they didn't. If it was anything to do with the football, and after kick-off time, why would they be at Brentford station? I also wonder about the vast amount of police just after 8.00pm at Hounslow station ...

There were lots of police about for Brentford's last game of the season on saturday but that kicked off at 3pm!

Brentford Football Club were playing Luton Town in the last match of the season. Kick-off was 3pm. There were over 10,000 people present at the match and there had been rumours of possible disruption by Luton's hooligan element. Thankfully the match passed off without incident, other than the understandable celebrations on the pitch after the final whistle.
