She was summing up with a deadline to stop at 10 on the dot, and despite some bogus points of order got through what she had to say with moderate competence, although it was hardly riveting and obviously the Opposition and at least 1 Labour MP voted for a public enquiry. This was voted down 217-260. It is a thankless task summing up a debate and there is little scope to demonstrate wider competence (or not) given the fairly prescribed format of debate. What was interesting about the debate, which I watched for over an hour, was the quiet but sincere expression of feelings from all sides of the House, quite different from the normal bear garden, perhaps because the bulk of the MPs left it to the Staffordshire MPs. An interesting revelation by Tony Wright (Labour) that the Staffordshire MPs of all parties regularly meet to discuss Staffordshire issues, indicating a sensible cross-party approach one would otherwise not have known of.They Work for You is a site listing the speeches, Parliamentary questions etc, debates in which your MP is involved. I haven't checked to see how often, and on what subjects, she has spoken ib the lst year or so. Mostly, if not exclusively, I suspect in the field of her ministerial role.
