Beating the bounds.

Sorry if this topic has been covered previously,but are any of the old boundary stnes for Brentford still in place/exist?? I know years back it was a ritual for the elders to take some of the youngsters around to all the boundary stones to teach them the areas Brentford covered.Cant say as ive ever seen any of the stones,have you?

The Kings and Queens ..who have visited the Borough..

Well, we remember that the Queen came to Hounslow recently...has she been to Brentford of Chiswick.King George 6th (whilst still a Prince) accompanied his father George 5th to open the "new" Civil Service Sports Ground in Chiswick in the mid 1920's.King Edward 7th came to Brentford and Chiswick to open the "new" Kew Bridge in the early 1900's.Can't recall if Queen Victoria came to Brentford...did she?And Neil is telling us on the 1777 thread that William 4th was in Brentford High Street in the 1820's.Any more info?

Found an interesting article about E111s.  They are about to be replaced by a European health Insurance card.  If you completed one last year - it is now out of date!  They ran out on 31.12.04.  Ones being issued now run until 31.12.2005, and if you 'tick-the-box' you will be sent the new Euro card automatically.You can download the forms needed from the site but you still have to take them to the Post office for validation.1.  Web site www.dh.gov.uk2.  Health Advice for Travellers3.  Right hand box with a picture of new card  - "The European Health Insurance Card and important changes to E111 form" a snippet of info from the site: "As a result of recent changes to European law a new E111 form has been introduced to replace the old one. If you are planning to travel to the countries concerned during 2005 you should apply for the new E111, as the old ones are only valid until 31st December 2004. The main difference between the old and the new form is that the new form is now issued on an individual, as opposed to a family, basis. However, you will only need to complete one application form in order to receive E111s for you, your spouse/partner and children. The new E111 form will be valid until 31st December 2005."

Mogden residents win historic court victory

What a superb result at Feltham Magistrates' today for the Isleworth and St. Margaret's residents who have fought against the unacceptable level of odour which has been visited upon them by Thames Water and its Mogden sewage plant.The London Borough of Hounslow's PR people fired off a Press Statement almost immediately, dropping the names of our beleagured local MP and majority party councillors, but let us not forgot who has really done the work in bringing TW to heal - the residents themselves who have campaigned through the Mogden Residents' Action Group (MRAG), led by the tireless Hanifa Dobson, and the thousands who supported them with petitions and with their regular and documented complaints.MRAG is probably the finest example of a local community-based, resident-led interest group which has operated without the stifling influence and interference of party politics.  Its management team have been absolutely first-class every inch of the way and it is a disgrace that their very crucial contribution was not even acknowledged in Hounslow's press release.The battle is not necessarily over.  There is every chance that Thames may appeal the decision of the court.  Nevertheless it is an important landmark victory and a huge well done to Hanifa and the team for making it happen.

Residents' Association relaunched with a bang - well done Worton!

Last night I had the honour of chairing the Annual General Meeting of Residents Of Worton Estate (ROWE) the official RA of the community on Isleworth ward's second largest housing estate.The association has been going for many years but as is so often the case too much responsibility had fallen on too few shoulders and active membership had dwindled to a bare few.A few months ago Hounslow Homes unilaterally announced that it was "suspending" the existing association (!) and seemed to be trying to promote a factional takeover by one group of residents who were keen to reboot the association and get it active again.  The aim of vitalising ROWE was of course a worthy one but I and my fellow ward councillors sensed that there was more to this and we were uneasy with the implicit hostility to the existing committee members who had tried their best under difficult circumstances (one of whom is in her late seventies and was recently critically ill).Fortunately the residents asked me as their elected ward councillor to chair the meetings leading up to and including the AGM.  The result was the election of a united committee comprising the existing Chair, a new Secretary and Treasurer and a full compliment of committee members from a cross-section of the community.  A spirit of real unity was apparent at the meeting and committee members old and new seem very keen to pull together for the greater good of the whole community on the estate.  The well-attended meeting discussed a number of outstanding estate issues which the reborn association will be taking up with the various appropriate authorities with the full support of their elected members.Taking a leaf out of Hounslow Homes' own book, their invite was sent by second-class post to the wrong address and ought to arrive some time next week.Obviously as everybody is welcome to participate in the association there will be no demand on the estate for the establishment of any rival or parallel group - everybody is able to work together as one, which is how it should be done.My sincere congratulations and best wishes go out to ALL the people on the estate who had the foresight to come together to make this work.  I am very, very excited by this development and pledge to it my wholehearted co-operation and support.Well done Worton!

Tentelow Lane School still stands..built in 1767!!

Talk about history staring one in the face...two of us stopped off at the Fuller's Plough Pub in Tentelow Lane...north of Osterley Park..for a quick refreshment on Wednesday night.It was a first visit there for 20 years. As we parked the car I noticed some small cottages etc in some detail...for a change. To our surprise one building had a plaque saying it was a free School..built in 1767 no less.Normally one would just drive by and not notice these things.The evening concluded at Madhu's Restaurant in South Street Southalllisted in the Good Curry Guide..as the best in the UK!

Isleworth community activist seeks sponsors for children's cancer charity.

Former Acting Secretary and Office Manager of the New Ivybridge Tenants' Association (NITA), Simon Anderson - now active with the independent tenants' group Ivytag - is seeking your support to help him raise funds for REACH, the children’s cancer charity.Simon’s daughter Shivon (9) was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is currently undergoing treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.She is being very brave but is concerned about losing her hair during her treatment.  As a gesture of solidarity, Simon has agreed to have his hair shaved off and is seeking sponsors.  All proceeds will go to the charity.The event had originally been booked for the Bridge Link Centre on Ivybridge but the offer has apparently been withdrawn, and will now take place in the hall at Isleworth Congregational Church on Wednesday, 26th January at 2.00pm.  Local press will be in attendance.If you would like to sponsor Simon – or, better still, to help him raise funds by collecting sponsors on his behalf – please contact Simon on 07913 152928.All offers of help and donations, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.

House prices

Just browsing through property sites for the Brentford/Kew area, and happened on a house for sale in Bushwood Road, Kew - since withdrawn (sold, possibly?) - at a price of £750,000.00!Back in the early 1930s, we lived in a rented house in Bushwood Road - No. 74; the landlord offered it to my Dad at a purchase price of £750.00!   Dad worked for London Transport at Gunnersbury - there was no way he could afford to purchase a shed, let alone a house, hence our move to Chiswick.   £750.00 to £750,000.00 ....... wow!

Personally I don't see how you can complain if you are only going by what other people are saying and have no personal knowledge, if we were all to take to the streets protesting everytime the BBC (or any other channel for that matter)broadcast something someone didn't approve of there'd be a permanent camp outside the TV centre.

Robbery at knifepoint near Osterley Station 4th Jan 05

How can three black males (so called "friends" or members of a gang)be proud of their performance in mugging a lone Indian pedestrian.Its totally dispicable.What a worrying quality of life these types of human beings are creating for the rest of us. Why should I have to think twice before walking down a Borough of Hounslow road in the late evening.My problem is that I would be so angry...rather than be scared..and that I would complain and fight...and probably lose my life.If we need more prisons because they are overflowing with 75,000 inmates...well let's build more. Trouble is 75,000 are in prison...but another 75,000 rogues are still on the streets uncaught.

Pulling up the ladder?

What do you make of the new regulations that will stop "incomers" from buying homes in National Parks and areas of outstanding beauty? I can understand the local people getting the hump over people buying second homes in rural areas which they use rarely and which helps to push prices up and then makes buying a no no for local youngsters. But I do think the blatant discrimination (which the authorities admit quite cheerfully) to prevent anyone who isn't local from buying a home is very worrying, I see other rural areas are also looking at this policy. How would it be if we all said unless you're born in London (or even just Isleworth) bog off? Those of us with older offspring know the awful housing problems they face with house prices being what they are, but I can't help thinking this sort of thing really isn't the answer.

Boston Manor Road.....the link to Hanwell

The forthcoming Farmers Market reminds me of last years thread when we drew attention to the charms of Boston Manor Road.Wondering from Half-Acre on the right hand side..past the Whelk Stall ..the COBBLES..the view of St Pauls...the Police Station and Cells and towerblock...the Free Church with the memorials in front..the new Church Hall(where Isleworth and Brentford area meeting are held)..the flats with the window boxes..and then the Library and Inverness Club.I went to the Library and then didn't get out of the Inverness Club.Thats where we met after the last Farmers Market. There still a long way to go..up Boston Manor Road..but we can do it one day...and draw attention to more of the intersting things on that long long Road.So meandering around the fairly new Ealing Community Website tonight.. DUM DUM OULDS

Having seen how volatile Cllr Oulds is in the Hounslow Council Chamber he would be the last person I would allow a gun too. Having had a loaded gun held to my head in an attempted robbery and seen the effects of gun crime on the streets of Manchester. Is it any wonder how guns get into the wrong hands the irresponsible storage of guns and bravado of those who want to be Mini Rambo’s with a Licence, I would have to say a lot more questions need to be asked about just how legal these guns are, how they are being stored, irresponsible ownership is how a lot of guns get onto our streets. I think this a bit more than a Prince Harry mistake. The idea that Cllr Oulds wants people to be able to use any means necessary to protect property is looking a bit extreme, as for letting us all know how his youngster is shown how to fire the AK47 is bit much, has he not seen Bowling for Columbine, may be this is anti-gun lobby propaganda in his eye .Or is all this just innocent fun and he was working with the anti EU Bruge Group with his friends in high places to have a coup in the civic centre.  Anyone know where you can get helicopter.

Brentford High Street closed this afternoon: another accident?

Seeing a 267 bus ..with passengers..on the Great West Road this afternoon raised my eyebrows.  It had come up Boston Manor Road, turned left at the Great West Road...and then did the "U" turn infront of the Glaxo building and proceeded towards Ealing Road. I guessed something must have happened on the High Street.About an hour later...travelling from Kew Bridge westerly ...all traffic was diverted up Ealing Road from the Watermans Art Centre. A Community Policeman confirmed to me that there had been another accident in the area. So that may explain any delays you may have heard about.

I have stumbled across a local website for Hanwell (north of Brentford and at the west of Ealing)The sections on history of the area are very intersting with accompanying images.  Old Trams, Trumpters Way old railway stop off, Brunel's three Bridges and more.Its an area of much Victorian interest....there's even an industrial estate off of Boston Manor Road...full of cobbles.So: just in case someone's interested.

Isleworth and Brentford Area Committee (Planning) meeting 13.1.2005

There is an item on the agenda for The White Lodge Club, Syon Lane Isleworth.  Those of you who aren’t familiar with the ‘lodge’ will probably recognise it better as the land which spans the Conquest Club grounds in Wood Lane through to the scruffy entrance (which normally has old balloons hanging around it) on Syon Lane.It is a beautiful piece of undeveloped land left at that end of Isleworth.  It is also a scruffy and unkempt edged, piece of land which requires environmental (supportively) driven tidying up having been allowed to fall into this unmanaged state of repair over the years, to the detriment of the local residents and the area as a whole.It is also part of the original land of Wyke House grounds and has historical interest (maybe archaeological?) as well as having ancient hedgerows and old woodland which have been neglected and damaged.Who is responsible for maintaining and replanting the gaps in ancient hedgerows – and copses of trees - of which there are few left in the Borough?  Can you just take out bits of ancient hedgerows because they are now in the way of modern development of the land?  What is happening to the wildlife using these pieces of land?No mention of the old ‘hedgerows’ appears to be included in the application, and worryingly there is mention about fencing the boundary – so would that include taking away more?The ariel map I have of the land (albeit a Getmapping book) shows a large wood land near to where the new building is proposed.  How can a new entrance to the site be opened without knocking down trees.Do they own the whole site up to road, to allow them access onto the road, or are they asking the Council to knock down trees which are on common or Council land to give them their access?I understand that there was an environmental survey (from the air?) in recent years to show copses and hedgerows to ensue they are preserved.  Would an environmental report give this information?Is a check made that clearance of trees has not gone on to prepare land such as this in advance of making a planning application?Why are these pieces of land in Osterley not protected from the removal of trees and ancient hedgerows? and more importantly why is there not an agreed maintenance program in place to ensure their continued life and that of the wildlife which would be dependant on the hedgerow for survival in the area?The golf club and garden centre on Windmill Lane appear to have been chopping down the ancient hedgerows and the trees and making bonfires of the lot for the past couple of years.  I thought there were protection laws for ancient hedgerows and the hedges?  Or is that only in the countryside and not here in Hounslow?  The land opposite Osterley park and next to the pub has been completely altered yet I thought one of the main concerns for land such as this, is that it is not altered?Removing trees from an old copse against Syon Lane will alter the land and the road and the lead up to the other open land beyond.  It is delightful driving along this stretch of the road with a canopy of trees and this should be acknowledged!  I particularly love driving passed this line of trees with the dappled shade, in the summer.   What plans of land management have been laid by the owners of the Land such as this in the Osterley area?  These owners are caretakers of the land, for the future of the area, surely?  Do they have any responsibilities towards the Land for Life maintenance of it?  Is it being cleared with a long term view that all this land could be prime development for housing? And consequently treated as such?Some of the comments in this report appear to be leading and do not appear to be independent.  Is this the role of the report writer?One comment is about the H28 bus service and states it is 'not very regular'.  I thought the H28 was a hard won bus route - won with support of Councillors to improve transport links to the area, and that it IS a regular service!If the Councillor considering the application is familiar with the history of the land, this may not be a problem, but for others surely it forms a misleading impression?  For example – “Although the vehicular access to the site is possible from both Wood Lane and Syon Lane, the Wood Lane entrance has been blocked for some time.”I understood it was blocked to suit the owners?  It wasn’t very tidily blocked, and for some time the access has been for a company to use the car park to keep a fleet of cars there, so it can be opened by choice at any time?  Maybe I am wrong?  What does ‘blocked mean’  how relevant is it to the application?Will it be fully closed with trees and reinstatement of the hedgerow in keeping with the area, to extend the boundary back into its proper place and leave only a pedestrian access?  Or will it mean they can split the land again and sell off this bit with vehicle access and a plot of land for building on, because it has previously had a building on it?Should we be grateful that as the hedgerow has been damaged and not preserved and is now in a poor state of repair, that the owner of the land is now prepared to remove the rest and put in a fence which would 'look' nicer? ... !Since writing the above paragraph I have passed the Conquest club buildings at 6.30pm tonight – the entrance is fully open, the lights are on and there are people inside!  Hardly unused!If it is dilapidated – surely that is down to the owners and not a consideration for the Council to feel they should use for pulling it down?  If the buildings are not as well insulated as a brick modern building – maybe the original planning permission was granted on the basis that the building should be in the form of a light weight pavilion?  Has anyone dug out the original planning application?Can there be an environmental report and a historical report requested to establish the state of the land from these perspectives? Can the Borough decide about the preservation of trees and hedgerows in the Osterley area and work with the owners of the land to ensure they undertake their responsibilities for maintenance and replanting - having purchased land such as this?

Rubbish/Recycling Collections

I think I must be confused does anyone have the answer?  I knew that the collection days for recycling and refuse were all over the place because of the Christmas and New Year breaks but this is my second week back at work and I had assumed that these collections would be back to normal this week.  I believed that the recycling was normally collected on Tuesday and rubbish on Wednesday but today is Thursday and both my recycling box and my rubbish are still parked up outside my home uncollected.  Judging by the amount of boxes and rubbish bags I have seen outside peoples houses in the area over the last few days I don't think I can be the only one who is confused.

Renovation of 1/2 mile long 200 year old wall continues..

Dedicated craftsmen have been working diligently along the wall surrounding Osterley Park...giving it a deserved refurbishment.Bricks had become loose or were missing...and brushing and repointing was obviously necessary.As funding became available..another stretch of wall was tackled..Now the craftsmen have completed a long stretch from the Main Gate eastwards along Jersey Raod  and soon will be at the Ridgeway Road North Junction.So if you want to see the 200 year old "Georgian?" wall before it's total repair..drive or walk by soon!

I've just stumbled across an article on the Putney website..about a Parliamentary enquiry into Diabetic experiences..and inviting sufferers to participate.I am diabetic...and I was just wondering whether Mrs Keen...with her nursing and clinical interests ..at Westminster and Covent Garden would have learned about this and perhaps published some information either on these website..or in the local Press... or even dropped me a line!! This is a plea for help, especially to those nice BrentfordTW8 users who live near the Ealing/Brentford borders; or to all of you, for that matter, wherever you reside in sunny Brentford. Please visit the EalingToday web site, if you have time and join in the traffic there. Its a fairly new site and has only been publicized fairly recently and its finding difficulty in expanding. With 100 gales blowing in from the Atlantic, I have been concerned about my Eire and Hebridean friends and relations.The Hebrides have phoned to say that the winds have eased off, electricity has returned to the household, there's now heating and hot water..but the School is still closed.  Wind debris is scattered round the croft. The Western Isles are in mourning for the family who lost their lives.Any news from the west of Ireland. Ann is missed.

TW8 Moderator achieves fame

I attended a marathon session by the London Rivers Association at Guildhall yesterday. Numerous speakers, one being Mark Lloyd of Thames 21, speaking on the work being done to clean up the waterways of London.He had prepared an illustrated presentation with numerous photographs to show the more significant achievements of the past year. I nearly jumped out of my chair like an over eager schoolboy, to shout "I know that man!" when one of the pages came up on the screen. There in prominent position was a man in a pork-pie hat, proudly clutching a washbasin to his chest.I'm still nagging them to organise another Brentford clean up.

Great Carpenter

After living with a shoddily built larder and no cupboards in the lounge, we had Steve Abrey build a fantastic larder in our kitchen and floor to ceiling built in cupboards in the lounge. He also built us an extra large rabbit hutch for our bunnies (not his usual line of work!).He is tidy, friendly and very reasonably priced and we are very happy to recommend him. Global Warming and Flooding in Brentford.

I'm beginning to get worried about this global warming and consequent flooding. Not that I understand much of what I hear and read about climate change, but I believe if we(the world) don't do much about carbon dioxide emissions(whatever that is) in the next 20-30 years, the sea levels are going to rise such that many coastal settlements will be flooded. Indeed, I'm told that the rise in sea levels has been going on for some time already! Does this mean that the tides at Brentford are getting ever higher and that Chiswick, Isleworth and Kew will become soggy wetlands?Do I need to worry about global flooding? Or should I dismiss the possible problem, because I've exceeded three score years and ten? What d'ya think?  :-o

need washer / vacuum in or around brentford

hello,i've just recently moved to a flat in brentford, which unfortunately doesn't include a washer.  does anyone know of any second-hand appliciance shops in / around brentford where i could pick one up for relatively cheap?  i suppose anywhere in west london would be fine, but i've got a little ford fiesta and i worry that it'd crumble with a washer in the back.  :)  delivery, although not completely essential, would make me and my car's life a lot easier!i also need a vacuum (preferably used), if anyone has any suggestions.thank you!!-matt

CensorshipI started this thread because some of the views on censorship in the cheers for Auntie Thread.I must of had my head in the sand all these years that Rap artists have been pushing what they would like you to think is music.I was converting a CD to MP3 for one of my Granddaughters and I can honestly say I sat though 60 Minuets of utter filth, its just not swear words you have to put up with but descriptions of unnatural acts that no 13 or 14 year should even know about.I think most of the time adults are unaware of what’s said because its spoken in today’s speak, in fact my Granddaughter translated some of it for me!Now my first reaction was to through the lot in the dustbin or not convert any more over to MP3, but then you turn on the radio or TV and it’s all there as well.How can we as adults, stop them from hearing such filth if its push at them 24/7 by most commercial stations.

I feel miserable today!

Its raining. The refuse collectors of Ealing have taken our rubbish and scattered lots of it in our front drive. The world news is sooo depressing. And I lost both sets at tennis this am. And to cap it all, my dandruff refuses to abate!Would someone post something to cheer me up please. So: Hounslow Labour Party have a website...But Brentford Isleworth (and Chiswick) Labour Party seemingly don't.Confusingly, Ann Keen is referred to as the MP for Brentford and Isleworth...but she covers Chiswick too.I'm still learning the ropes.THE HLP website includes the following extract about Mrs Keen.   Her commucations with Chiswick residents regarding Police Matters seem misty. "ANN is currently working with local police to assist in recruitment and retention of police officers. Through her website at http://www.annkeenmp.org.uk/home/, Ann Keen advises us that she works with the Chancellor, Gordon Brown as his Parliamentary Private Secretary on debt relief. She does get paid an additional amount for being a Parliamentary Private SecretaryFriday’s Evening Standard featured a full page on key members of staff who have apparently been assembled to take on top jobs if Gordon Brown becomes Prime Minister. The likes of Ed Millibrand, Sue Nye, Gus O’Donnell, Spencer Livermore, Jon Cunliffe, Michael Ellam, Damian McBride, Beth Russel and Ian Austin were featured with mini biographies but no mention was made of Ann Keen. What a delectable thought.

Smell of Kerosene in Isleworth

A few times over the past year or so I have become aware of a strong smell of aircraft fuel (kerosene) in the air in Isleworth. This is on the London road and sometimes in our garden in St John's Road. I'm not sure whether this isn't just the wind carrying the smell from Heathrow airport, or maybe some other cause, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has smelt it and has any ideas where it might come from.

Lawsey escapes from the Wardrobe..& is back in town!

I never thought I'd get away from those windy islands...the Outer Hebrides...a hundred haggis's off the UK mainland!Those twenty plus thousand residents living on the Isle of Lewis are very brave living through the winter in such wild weather. The curtains of rain,hail,and snow were a sight to be ....umm....not wished on anyone!!  Nontheless,over Xmas and New Year, your hardcore correspondent survived it all...even though he found himself allocated a caravan on the beach...as accommodation at the family home was overflowing!! The wind was so noisy and gusting one was reminded of life at the base camp on Mt Everest!Socially and gastromonically the holiday was all very pleasant and it was a joy to spend time with my daughter and her husband Murdo Stal Macleod MacDonald (a typical name up there!)and their three children...and his other relations and friends nearby....at Upper Coll!! near Back..on the east coast.Departing Stornaway by ferry I left behind islanders alarmed at the 2005-2006-2007  prospect of  about the 300 windmills  being erected on their skyline (each with 400 foot width propellors!)No Community Forums up there...not even Broadband yet...so little opportunity for them to stir the porridge!..Back on the mainland at Ullapool,where the Shell Garage Cashier has a fabulous view of Loch Broom, the lonesome road takes one to Inverness..now a City...and then 600 miles to London via Aviemore (snow blizzard), Perth, and then south..to Sunny Brentford!So, Happy New Year to everyone.  Lets hope that our wonderful cyberspace friendships continue and that everyone feels and knows that their own keyboard activities are much valued.

River/stream under Griffin Park??

Does anyone know if there is any truth in the rumour of a river/stream/brook that runs under Griffin Park?? I know the site was once an orchard owned by Fuller smith and Turner,was there a waterway to irrigate the orchard? Perhaps nearby BROOK ROAD ? has something to do with it? According to legend it was on Twelfth Night that the wife of sir John de Mowbray was riding on horseback across the fields near Haxey on the Isle of Axholme , when a sudden gust of wind blew her large black silk hood. The wailing of the sirens....

Does anyone else get the right hump with the police driving down London rd or the A4 in the early hrs of the morning,sirens blaring out? This happens almost nightly.Surely at 3am there are not sufficient cars in front of the police to warrant this. A flashing blue light would surely be enough and the odd wail on the siren at this time...

Saving St. George's Church

As someone who remembers when I was a child and a Girl Guide, I recall going to the church on our Girl Guides "Church Parade" on Sunday mornings. So I am very happy to hear that the church has been saved.  The old buildings should be preserved, thanks to everyone who fought to save this one.     I live in Oregon now so I am too far away to help much but had to tell you how much I appreciate the people who saved this old building.                          Doris M. who finds it difficult to hire a trustworthy, reliable workman nowadays? I did and was always a bit dubious about having strange men in my house! I was then recommended Richard the Plasterer by a neighbour and have never looked back! Kew Gardens at night

It's that time of year again and Kew Gardens are having their late evening openings. For any of you out there who havn't seen Kew in the dark they will be open late from 16-19 December (4.15 to 9pm free entry). It is a magical experience with many trees floodlit from below, and the weeping willow in front of the Palm house dripping with fairy lights reflected in the lake. This year they also have an ice rink next to the Temperate House. I went late on Saturday (not to skate!)and watched many adults & children enjoying themselves. There is a large cafe area too where you can sit & watch the skaters. It looks fantastic all lit up. (You can book hour long sessions see website www.kew.org)It would look even lovelier if we had the odd flurry of snow!

Has anyone seen a white jack russell type dog in Brentford over the weekend.  Shannon went missing from Ferry Square on Friday, and we are desperate to hear any news.  Did you see a white dog, with short white hair and a ginger patch on her forehead.  She barks a lot, but is not a threat.  NOrmally she would just sit outside the house, and wait for someone to let her in, so it is very strange that she has not come home.  If you have any news, or saw this dog on Friday please call me on 07931 295 235.Many thanks Louise

Any good at deciphering dreams?

Picture the line of planes coming down my street - you can see the line banked up well into the distance.  Replace that with a line of those space invader alien thingies (they are all smiling incidently) and make them closer together for an invasion.  The space ships are heading for Heathrow to use the existing runways and they then take the tube to Osterley (skip the passport control and immigration bits they weren't in the dream).  Yes, this does take some considerable time and people are coming out into the street to point at the ships and discuss what is going on.  Somebody rings the Government.  The aliens take on the form of people but 'we' all know who they are and they have guns..If you come up with any strange interpretations which may confirm anything other than my being a level headed cen-sib-ell citizen then please don't respond, nobody will believe you .. anyway!Puh -leese!   ;-)

Alone at over ninety

The independence of the judiciary.

Were the Law Lords correct in comparing the detention of prisoners without trial (breaching their human rights) to the nightmare scenario of Stalin's Russia?  I firmly support the decision of the judiciary to stand up to this government's interference with people's human rights. Lord Hailsham once described Margaret Thatcher's government as an 'elected dictatorship' and he was her Lord Chancellor. Is the Blair government any better? What do you think? Should the judges do as they are told or remain free of political interference?

Sorry this is a bit unseasonal, but it's news today and won't be shortly:---------------------------------------------------------------------From the most recent "Viewpoints" newsletter, published by members of the Labour Party in Brentford & Isleworth:"Can things get any worse for the Labour Party in Hounslow?  Membership has plummeted - except in Hounslow Central ward where multiple recruiting by men desperate to be selected as local Labour candidates have been signing up friends and family.  This familiar fiasco has led to the Constituency Party being suspended by Head Office."Our MPs are getting a lot of publicity.  'Farce of Mr. and Mrs. Expenses' says the front page of the Evening Standard.  'Husband and wife Labour MPs Alan and Ann Keen are each claiming £17,000 housing allowance despite living nine miles from Westminster.  The couple represent neighbouring seats in west London and share a house in Brentford'.  The couple, says the Standard, have not broken any rules.  Maybe not but is it very clever to use the rules so blatantly and claim a double allowance?  No wonder they can afford a second home in Covent Garden."Then there is the strange case of Ann Keen's son, Mark Lloyd-Fox, (who also lives at the home in Brentford according to the electoral register.)  He is in the property development business and was caught out making anonymous phone calls to Planning Committee Councillors.  He isn't even bright enough to make sure the calls couldn't be traced and the police got involved.  Thankfully he just received a warning on this occasion."Then there is the free skip that the Labour Deputy whip on Hounslow Council had delivered, saying it was for community use and then, it is alleged, got filled up with his own unwanted material.  The Labour Group, led by Alan Keen's employee Colin Ellar, won't investigate this and the only action taken by the Labour Group was to expel the Councillor who drew attention to the skip incident, ex-leader and mayor John Connelly, and that wasn't done in accordance with Labour Party rules so more will be heard about that."All this comes after years of dodgy practices on the Constiteuncy General Committee where a host of GMB delegates turn up once a year to vote in Ann Keen's favoured comrades and are never seen again for twelve months - unless something crops up that our MP wants fixed."Hounslow has a terrible reputation across London in Labour Party circles.  The word 'Hounslowesque' is a collective expression that stands for shadowy planning practices, domination of the Labour Council group by MPs, and just plain comical antics.  Hounslow provides the best free comedy show in London."When is something going to be done about this?  We are on course to lose at least one MP at the general election next year and control of the council the year after.  We have a suspended party, MPs whose reputations are tarnished and a Council that is the laughing stock of London.  The local party cannot do anything because it is in the iron grip of the MP.  The only hope is that those members who care about the Party write to the London Labour Party or the National Labour Party and urge them to step in before it is too late."----------------------------------------------------------------------POSTSCRIPT:  Last week the Brentford & Isleworth CLP sent out an appeal to its members, including those who are lapsed or only recently joined, urging them to volunteer to the Selection Group Panel for possible selection as local election candidates.  Desperate times call for desperate measures!Merry Christmas.

Every year we pay Council Tax. But where does our money go, who decides where our money is spent, how is it spent, and does the way in which our money is spent give us the services we want? We are approaching the time of year when Councillors will sit down and decide upon priorities for the delivery of all council services, they will be lead by the recommendations of officers of the council and these Councillors will approve or otherwise, the proposed budget based upon the current financial position of the council taking into account the future projections of the council. Councillors will also agree on the level of Council Tax for the coming year. The council also receives funding from central government in the form of grants and business rates to add to the revenue generated through Council Tax, so where do we want our money spent? The services the council provide generally fall into the categories below. Do we want to see spending levels remain the same or do we want increases in some services, or cuts in others? Slothful train service

Since the new timetable came in, has anyone actually been on a train which ran to schedule? Most of the trains I've taken have been delayed by 10-15 minutes, and a couple by as much as an hour. This is on top of the slower journey (not only have the fast trains gone, but the slow ones are timetabled to take 5 minutes longer than they used to), and it all makes the service even less competitive with nipping up the road to the Piccadilly line.

Hi folks - I've just been reading through the past topics on this site and I've been so impressed and amused by the use of language and the numerous words(some of them slang) used to describe just one thing. Here's an example: Several beautiful words have been used to describe "a stupid person" and those words have been used by Brentford posters - here they are:pillock, twerp, prat, idiot, wanker, plonker, nutter, dipstick, potty, dickhead, dunderhead, fruit and nut case, scrote, scumbag, old fart, etc etc. (guess there are many more - please add to this list, if you'd like to).As a matter of interest and fun, how many words can you think of that mean a policeman? I'll start: the bill,.......Yeh, I think English is a beautiful language! ;-o

I would like to recommend this shop to those of you who haven't already found it - I drive over from Chiswick to shop there. Although on the high road it is a bit tucked away. It is full of great little gifts for all ages and nice smellies for around the house. BFC Planning Application

A planning application from Brentford Football Club is to be decided upon at the next I&B Planning Committee meeting on 16th December.BFC have secured over £1M in Football Stadia Improvement Fund money to make improvements to Griffin Park that will go a long way to help the club survive until a new stadium can be found. The FSIF have stated they are unlikely to offer such a large sum in the future, basically its a now or never offer.I hope our elected representatives see that approving this planning application is a key moment in the future survival of the club, and that Brentford, without its football club will become a much poorer regardless of how many new flats you build.

Ladies and Gents:Former St George's Church (current Music Museum, just closed) 367 High Street Brentford, opposite Watermans Park.The above building is earmarked for demolition and goes before the council Sustainable Development Committee (SDC) this coming Tuesday 14th December 7:30 pm.I would urge you all to join in and object to any demolition order in the strongest terms and seek alternative uses for the church. Despite popular belief the church is NOT owned by Barratt but will transfer to them on successful planning application.This council has a somewhat poor reputation for saving heritage items but more importantly this piece of history is intended to go under the hammer for only 19 apartments - like Brentford needs another 19 apartments with all the planning and construction going on.Please either write to the SDC or attend in person. Are we being taken for mugs?

I read a very interesting article in this weeks Brentford Chiswick and Isleworth Times about the attendance records of some our local Councillors written by our own Sally Henfield.It seems that two of the very worse offenders for actually bothering to attend meetings are the Syon Cllr Corinna Smart who has only attended 57% of her meetings but also claims an extra five thousand two hundred and fifty pounds for her extra responsibilities on top of the nine thousand two hundred and fifty two pounds which is paid out to each of our Cllrs regardless of how many meetings they can be bothered to attend.The other local Cllr is our old friend Patrick Edwards who is supposed to represent the people of Brentford but only managed to attend just 12 out the 22 meetings he was expected to.He also only sent his apologies 60% of the time.Cllr Edwards explained this as "I don't think that is bad form and I think readers will understand that council work cannot be limited to attending meetings. I prefer to meet the constituents. Wot! no lights?

Does anyone know why Scrooge is alive and well and residing in Hounslow. There aren't any Christmas lights in the High St. and no trees outside the Treaty Centre like there usually are. Some daft idiots left the remnants of the lights of several years ago in the trees in the High St, - but of anything this year? not a sign. Please someone tell me this isn't a manifestation of political correctness, or have the Council just cancelled Christmas?

Some 15 years ago a Manager at the Bultrode Pub..in Lampton Road Hounslow...near Hounslow Central Station...told me that a ghost lived on the first floor! ...often dormant..but has been know to make an appearance.Any other local creepy stories??

Hiring a trio of musicians.

I'd like to hire a trio of musicians and I'd appreciate info on where to go to make a booking. Live background music is required for a reception - keyboard, guitarist and violin(or similar), evening for 3 hours, middle of the road popular music, venue in Ealing on a Saturday or Sunday in mid-February. I've no experience of hiring musicians - could someone give me guidance and information please and where to start my search? Perhaps there's such a trio in Brentford?? Thanks. ;-o

Illegal Rave in Brentford all weekend?

Was anybody else effected by what I can only assume was an illegal rave all weekend in Brentford. I have been told by neighbours that it was held in a church/building that is empty and currently awaiting re-development. The music/base continued for two days and was incredibly annoying/disturbing. I phoned the police over the weekend who advised me to contact Hounslow Environmental services this morning who are looking into it as apparently the police have no power over such issues! Does anyone know anymore about this and what can be done as it will make living in Brentford miserable!

Cane chair repairs?

Please can anyone recommend a place in Brentford or Ealing where we could get our old cane armchairs collected and repaired? Had these old armchairs for yonks but over the years the grandchildren have gradually picked the cane bindings and they're getting a bit loose. :-(

Coalyards near Kew Steam Museum

Is anyone old enough (like me) to remember the magnificent Clydesdales that pulled the coal carts back in the 1940s?During the 1947 blizzard, we had to collect our own coal from the yard (Dad made a sleigh, and my sister and I went with him for the coal).  For the first time ever, we were able to go into the stables to see the Clydesdales up close - towering like Mnt. Everests over their half-doors! They were housebound because of the snow. Ordering coal by phone today is no comparison to those few perishing weeks in the winter of '47, when we would make our exciting weekly forays over to Kew.

The News of the World, Gordon Brown and short-sight

Report today that the Chancellor is going to "crack-down" on "shirking" civil servants because of the high levels of sickness. Never mind that they are actually less than British Airways a private company, never mind that a survey last week showed that high sickness levels are linked to low staff morale and lack of confidence in higher management. Guess where the lowest morale and the biggest lack of confidence were to be found? In the civil service, no surprise there then. What gets my goat is that no-one seems the slightest bit interested in asking WHY, well, perhaps Gordon would like to hear his job was being dumped via T.V., perhaps he would like to undergo the farcical appraisal system imposed upon the staff, perhaps he'd like to have wages so low he'd qualify for his precious tax credits, then when he's asked himself that perhaps he'd then reflect upon whether or not he'd put his health before his crap employer. No-one condones people taking the mickey and if people are then that is a matter to be taken up with the individual by their line manager, but to tar everyone with the same brush is insulting and out of order.

Car club in Brentford/Ealing?

Is there a shared car club in Brentford? If there is, I'd like to know how well it works..Listened to a programme about car clubs on BBC Radio5Live this morning and I think the idea is an excellent one. I use my car only occasionally(1000 miles a year) and rely mainly on minicabs and my bicycle for transport and the wonderful London busses, of course), so a shared car on an internet booked basis would be ideal for my family. Anyone know if there's a car club in Ealing? I wonder if our Council might be interested? Does anyone have experience of car clubs - the pros and cons of their workings - and costs please?

Brentford High St Redevelopment

Can anyone tell me what happened to the proposals for redeveloping the south side of Brentford High St? We were going to get another supermarket and perhaps a cinema (can't recall whether this idea was dropped). The local paper was full of plans a couple of years ago. Can't say I've kept up since.

Kew Steam Museum opened an audio-visual exhibition on the changes in Brentford's waterside last night. It will run from today until February 28th.Maps from the 16th Century on, paintings, illustrations and old photos plus taperecorded reminiscences, all chart our changing scene.Go and have a look!

hand car wah

being the mother of a three year old who loves to get whatever hes eating right into the seats and on the floor, my car always needs cleaning. ive tried nearly everyone of these places in our local area i have never happy with the result. i fell no sooner had i got out it was finished and was being asked for the money. living in a flat its impossible to do it myself (ok i am lazy!). today i tried the new one behind nat west bank in brentford high street. they spent about 45 minutes and cleaned every bit of my car. even getting all the stains out of seats. they have a system whereas 2nd visit is half price and 3rd visit is free. that in itself is good deal but they were so friendly and helpful. my car is the cleanest its ever been. will never go anywhere elso now - well worth a visit.

Sponsored walk to raise money for local Church

I was wondering if I might use this forum to promote an activity which I would like to think is for a good cause.During the last week in September I will be attempting a one-man sponsored walk from my local Church (Isleworth Congregational) to Abingdon in Oxfordshire, taking the long (i.e. river) route.  I am advised it is about 85 miles in total.  I did this route once before and it took me around 27 hours, but I was seventeen then and I'm...well...a little more than seventeen now.The purpose of the walk is to raise money towards the installation of access and washroom facilities for the disabled at the Church.  Being an old building, there are feasibility issues which make this installation a particularly complex and difficult task.If anybody reading this forum feels inspired to help a local Church, or would like to do something for people with disabilities, or simply has too much money and is looking for an excuse to give some away, then he/she should feel free to call me on 020 8891 6359 (answerphone) or at phil@isleworth.org giving contact details and the amount that he/she would like to contribute - either per mile or as a fixed total.  Any contributions, no matter how small, will be very gratefully received.Thank you.

Rats in Brentford

Has anyone else encountered the plague of rats in Brentford or is it just me they appear to be following?  If I have a phobia at all its rats!  I really am terrified of them and for the last few years I know Brentford has had a problem but they have never been so visible until recently.  A while ago whilst attending the Brentford Health Centre as I parked my car I watched 2 well fed rats slink along the outside of the building.  That was bad enough.A few months back early one morning a rat practically ran over my foot at Albany Parade.However the other night in the safety of my first floor flat, I happened to look out the window which is opposite a meat processing factory and I noticed in the car park what I first thought was a cat (it was huge) then I realised it was in fact a rat.  This was joined by another huge rat then within minutes the car park was awash with them.  It was hard trying to count them because they were scampering in and out of pallets and a skip but at one point I did manage to count 8.  I phoned pest control at the civic centre and got an answerphone telling me to leave a message which I did, name, address and phone number.  They did not return my call.  I called again the next day and they said they didn't know which Layton Road I meant (this didn't explain why they had not returned my call) however I am now obsessed with checking the car park and sure enough round about 5.30 the rats appear.  Layton Road must be the worst road in Brentford it has the lot, derelict buildings, litter and rubbish, the railway line, foxes and now rats.  I am so pleased I moved here (not).

Residents"You are being shortchanged in your Policing" says local Police Chief

At the Civic Centre tonight..at the Borough Community Police Consultative Group meeting....it was announced that Chief Superintendent Jeff Harris,Hounslow's Police chief will be moving to a new post outside thr Borough in January.The meeting had just started when the announcement was made...and the Chairman praised Jeff for his outstanding service...both on the Committee...and in the Community. Jeff was given a standing ovation.He certainly has come over as a very personable and communicative person and his departure will be a great loss. No new appointment has yet been made.At the end of the meeting...when Jeff was summarising his thoughts on the Hounslow Policing..I could hardly believe my ears...and started to scribble frantically ..as he said that "you (Hounslow's boroughwide citizens) have been shortchanged in your policing.""We should have 495 officers to fulfill our line up..and sometimes we have been up to 9% down"  (40?) "At the moment we have 481..We are below staff level"  " We are a very undersatffed Borough""Too often we lose staff so that they can cover duties outside the Borough...sometimes 14 Borough Officers are missing in this way."Some local Boroughs in London are OVERSTAFFED with Police..and yet sometime their numbers are not depleted in the same way for external duties.Jeff said...(this our Hounslow Police Chief)..."I have banged heads...and made noise..to higher authority..but without success"When my officers have to leave the Borough for these other duties ..it means that there are less officers available for work in Hounslow"  "I have over £200,000 of dosh allocated for Police Pay...but I cannot get staff allocated to me (I think that what he said)Jeff...really cracking on with wizzo lines...said that WE ALL "should be challenging our MP's (cough cough)...our Councillors...(the MPA?)and voice his and our concern"  A letter to the Commissioner of Police was also suggested.Its 11.30..I need to go out for an hour..there's lots more to report.PS No ChiswickW4.com members attended..except me and Sally Henfield  writing (properly) from BC&I Times....and all those seats and sandwiches had been laid on!!!!

The front page article about the new LibDem candidate for Brentford and Isleworth (& Chiswick) constituency includes the following statement."Ann Keen currently holds the seat with a majority of over 10,000 but boundary changes have removed some wards from the constituency that were traditionally Labour strongholds."Which wards.."Labour strongholds"... are no longer in the constituency? How many wards currently in the constituency?

A bad day for freedom and foxes...

Yes, I think foxes are cute too and I don't particularly want to go on a hunt either,but I respect the rights of others who do. It's ironic that nanny wants to ban the least efficient way of culling foxes(most get away)on the grounds of animal welfare and cruelty.That,it seems to me, is a complete nonsense when you consider what a miserable life pigs,chickens and cows have.Many of them are kept in nightmare conditions only to face a terrifying and miserable death. A fox,in relation, has a wonderful life.The chase, granted , must be terrifying for it and if it is fit and strong ,it will get away.This is simply the Dennis Skinners of the world having a go at the aristocracy,coupled with a few Jeremy and Jemimahs from Islington trying to 'modernise'everything.

Brentford Lock - YOUR IDEAS & THOUGHTS PLEASE!

Having recently joined purely from the angle of market research on a new business I wish to bring to Brentford Lock, I would like to say how useful and resourceful this website is and how interesting the forum threads are.Getting to the chase, I am one of the few independents who have secured retail space at Brentford Lock , and in particular a unit with A3 (restaurant) planning permission in the Heron View retail units. I am in the process of researching the needs of not only the residents of Brentford Lock, but also residents of Brentford at large. Please do also speak up if any of you are residents of Brentford Lock itself.What I would like to understand is what you feel would work well and what you feel would not work well in that area, considering its location, what already is available in Brentford, target market and what you feel Brentford lacks that would benefit the residents at large.At present I cannot be more detailed in what I wish to bring to the Lock, purely from the angle of current lease negotiations with the Landlord, so sorry for that, but do bare in mind that my unit comes with A3 (restaurant) permission.My unit is the smaller of the 3 that come with A3 permission, excluding the public house on the corner, so I want to use the space ideally. 1500 sq ft is not overly large to put togther a new restuarant concept, considering the amount of space that will be dedicated to back of house, toilets, kitchen, prep, ofiice etc and then get enough covers in to make it viable.If you wish to ask more questions about the development, and if I can be forthcoming, I will be only too pleased.Kind regardsBob

Salmon swimming by Brentford?

Is it true that salmon have been recorded swimming up the Thames? Therefore, might it be possible to fish for salmon off Ferry Quays or from the hard standing near the London Apprentice? Does anyone know, or is this an urban myth being spread by the London Tourist Board?Somewhere I heard that salmon and other exotic fish have been recently recorded in the Thames. If so, how the heck do they accurately substantiate these happenings?  ;-o
