Brentford's cobbles: At least 4 locations: Where are they?

And are they "protected"?

Three cobbled driveways(?) north side of Albany Road just passed the Albany Arms pub.And we're due rain today!

Excellent Kevin.The Kew Bridge Steam museum set of cobbles must be the best yet...and no doubt will look good when damp/wet. That Dock Road image was pretty special though wasn't it?But there's more elsewhere in Brentford !!

Thanks Keith for pointing us towards THE BUTTS ..and to Vicky for suggesting Ferry Lane..and to Tony who spoke about Enfield Walk.Must get the little camera to check them out. The Alton Arms is listed on the Historical Directories web site in the 1853 Mason's directory. It was run by George Dimmock, a horse dealer.  The 1851 census shows a George Dimmock, beerhouse keeper and horse dealer living at (what I think would eventually be) no. 179 High Street.By 1871 this was the Watermans Arms. "I wonder where the cobbles used in London were quarried?"A quick Google reveals that they came from multiple sources,as far apart as Cornwall and Macclesfield,the latter being transported by Pickfords in horsedrawn wagons.

Hi Jim  Yes you're right about Enfield Walk,it may just have two strips of cobbles running down the centre. I used to do a paper round from the newsagents opposite the Nelson several eons ago.    I also like that area,very honest un-pretentious area,the current residents keep it looking nice too.  Occupation Lane (Clayponds)I think is still cobble in part,but it's just in Ealing,(always thought it was Brentford).  I wonder where the cobbles used in London were quarried?They were a bit of a pest on a wet day whilst cycling.

Hi Tony,That pedestrian "roadway" between Enfield and Eastbourne is actually called Enfield Walk and I was there Tuesday evening it so happensYes there is a channel/trough running down the centre of the walkway....but I'm not sure if it contained cobbles..will check again.  I enjoy the area there..the Lord Nelson.

Alton Arms was in the High St in New Brentford. Owned by a George Dimmock.Also an Alton House is listed in the High St in Old Brentford. This was a beer only establishment and owned by a Thomas Stimpson.From a directory of 1853

Thanks for all that input David. What fun is the interest in disovering old Brentford.It seems that all the pictures on that City of London  slideshow are copywritten(?). None the less the Alton Pub and the Six Bells Pub drawings are available elsewhere without the CW!So here is the Six Bells entry.  First of all the pub sign picture taken by dear Michael Fletcher RIP.OoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooAnd you can just make out the pub sign in the drawing.OooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooNeil: That Ms Cotton lady doing Brentford Research up in Leicester may have an answer to that Alton Pub query.

So we have Dock Road, then the patch behind Morrisons and adjacent to the Whelk Stall at the Beehive Pub...and now the frontage of the GEORGE & DRAGON joins the list!OooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooI suppose the bar on the left was once an archway leading to the stables at the back?OoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooSo now there are two more locations! Five in total at least.

Collage is a great source of pictures. They have approx 20000 online.Will have to try and find the Alton Pub.Regards the cobbles, has anyone had a look at Carolyn Hammonds "Brentford then and now". Cant find my copy.

This very old drawing was lurking in distant cyberspace  and it was so faint that it wasn't clear what the subject matter was...but it was entitled THE ALTON PUB.  Using simple photo shop technology it was possible to enhance the image significantly.THE ALTON PUB does not appear in Gillian Clegg's book "Brentford and Chiswick pubs" so is this a discovery perhaps?Maybe one of the local historians will help identify it. Perhaps drop Neil in Australia an email too.

Absolutely right Audrey..and greetings to you.Yes there's a narrow stretch of cobbles behind the Beehive Pub....and the whelk stall!..and as you say, just where the Queen's Hall used to be.I was reading recently..maybe in Carolyn Hammond's Brentford book... that the Beehive used to be two buildings in from the corner of Boston Manor Road there...two corners houses being demolished to make way for road/corner widening!That's 2 cobble places so far..any other answers.Clues may follow..if needed!
