Boris is a jolly chap with all that phrase implies but seriously out of his depth as Mayor (a post with which I do not in any event agree). Ken had his faults but certainly was a major player in terms of heading politically a city of 8+million, The Lee Jasper business did him no good, guilt by association, and I never agreed with him running an alternative Foreign Office, though London does need to maintain its profile outside the UK. Just as a modest example of that, there was a display near the Tate Modern of wild life in Poland, which made one realise how rich it is there - but does English Tourism Board or whatever it is called project England, Britain, London with the same vigour in Poland? The point about Ken was that he realised there is a London-wide dimension that needs addressing, he could see that bigger picture and he could argue London's corner. There's no sign Boris is in that league - it's all balloons with him - a big blue surface but nothing but hot air inside.
