Dog Attack

Hi allI wanted to let you all know that a client of mine (i am a dog trainer) was in osterley park last week with her puppy retriever when a dog appeared suddenly, and without provocation attacked the puppy, he was badly hurt. Thankfully a passer by assisted her in carrying the dog to the car park, and then off to the vets to be treated for his injuries. the owner of this dog must have known the dog had some issues and if so it should have been muzzled. The dog is believed to have been a staffie or staff x. Staffie's in general are very social dogs, but as we all know in the wrong hands and without training/boundaries any dog can be dangerous. (please don't hate the breed, it is always the owner/handlers fault) Please be aware of your surroundings with your dogs, and if in doubt of another dogs temprement then leave the area.Anyone with a dog that they know or suspect has aggression issues please please muzzle them for everyones safety. And you should all teach your dogs the recall (you would be suprised how many don't), if in doubt of your dogs ability to come back when called then keep them on lead.If you are in a situation involving a dog attack on your own dog, be careful not to get yourself in harms way, it is a very hard siuation but your safety must come first!!!!suzanne

well sadly this is how many people get bit by dogs, i understand the need to protect your dog, i have 4 of my own and would probably do the same, even though we shouldnt.The type of owner generally of a dog who is aggressive and OFF lead is as you say not the type likely to listen, responsible dog ownership is far too difficult for them.Yet a trainer colleage of mine owns a lovely staffie who is very well behaved and she will always put it on lead when there are other dogs around, even though her dog is fine.there was another attack on a yorkshire terrier a week ago, this time  it was 2 jack russells who attacked, so as i said it is not always Staffies. any dog has the potential. size of dog of course determines the damage inflicted.be safe suzanne

This is happening all over the place - I wish people would heed your urges to put their dogs on the lead if they know their dogs dangerous but really, all you're likely to receive back are scathing retorts or gormless looks.As to a dog on dog attack - the natural reaction is to protect your own dog first, as was mine when she was attacked by a staff. It was either that or let the dog rip her to shreds - which of course was not an option.
