Fantastic News - War Memorial

I have just been informed by London Borough of Hounslow that Planning is at last through along with the necessary approvals from English Heritage and the Secretary of State.  Work on the St Lawrence's War Memorial can now commence.  Firstly the stone will be removed from its existing location, probably the first week of July and taken to the stone mason's workshop where it will be completely restored.  The restored Memorial will then be relocated to its new position outside Brentford Library in plenty of time for Remembrance Sunday.I am delighted that we can now go ahead with this very worthwhile project.Thanks to everyone for all the help and support.

Congrats to Julia. A job well done.Regards the siting of the memeorial, a space was left for this memorial to be moved, one day, when the funds could be found. It will sit with the other Brentford war memorials.As one who was involved in the moving of the so called Brentford history monument, outside the court, when it was lifted no one knew that it was in two pieces . You should have seen the look on our faces when it came apart. We had a limited budget and couldn't pay for a complete restoration when it was re-sited.

Re-reading my rather churlish thread on the War Memorial, just to clarify that I think Julia has done a terrific job in persuading the powers-that-be to renovate it. Julia should be thanked for doing something about a memorial that disgraces the memory of those who gave their lives. I still think, though, there must be a better site than Brentford Library in its run-down state. Why doesn't the council do something about it?

It's long overdue that the war memorial is restored as its present state is shocking. But it shows a lack of imagination that it is to be sited outside Brentford Library. The state of the library, inside and out, should make the council ashamed. As for its pitiful stock of (gravy-stained, ancient) books, words fail me. Andrew Carnegie must be turning in his grave. Pray, why are we paying rates? And what about the ugly block of patched up concrete that records the crossing of the Thames by Caesar's legions? This does not do justice to a landmark moment in London's history. Civic pride?
