New Labour - has the grass-roots finally had enough?

I had an interesting conversation over a pint on Thursday with somebody who has been active in the local Labour Party for some time.Nothing particularly spectacular or out of the ordinary about that, but what was out of the ordinary was that he asked me a question. The reason that was out of the ordinary was that it was the third time that particular question - unthinkable from anybody involved with the Labour Party until very recently - had been asked of me by a party member in recent weeks. And all three were from different wards, making the prospect of collusion a bit less likely.I won't divulge what the question was, far less the answer that I gave, but what it suggested to me was that some sections of the party are beginning to think outside the box in a quite radical way. I have always believed that there are some good people involved with the Labour Party in this borough whose creativity, independence of thought and genuine concern for the welfare of the community has been stifled for so many years. It was inevitable that, one day, a straw would break the proverbial camel's back and all that goodwill would come rushing to the surface. It may well be that the straw in this instance was the local party's reassertion of its support for the candidacy of the awful Ann Keen at the forthcoming general election in the face of all the revelations about her expense claims, her taxpayer-funded second home, the mysteries surrounding the fact that neither she nor her husband would seem to have been anywhere near their "first" home for over a year, and the controversy around her claim for private medical treatment. It is obvious to me that decent members were hanging on to the slender hope that the party would replace her with an electable candidate. Their hopes were cruelly dashed by the news, which for some peculiar reason the local party deemed worthy of a big publicity splash when, in strategic terms, it was about as deserving of announcement as an outbreak of flatulence in a crowded lift. The question is, now the deed has been done, do they stand and watch as what is left of the local party kisses its ass goodbye, or do they search for a radical solution to the party's predicament? We are always willing to speak, with strictest confidence assured, with any well-meaning member of the local Labour Party who is concerned for its future. We believe that the existence of a Labour Party, in some form or another, is not only desirable but essential to our local politics. With those party members who desire to see a stronger, more vibrant and engaged community - and there are certainly some - we have a commonality of interest. As Bob Hoskins will tell you, it's good to talk.from A Community In Action - http://philandrews.blogspot.com

First of all would be surprised that any former or present Labour Party Member might be open and trusting with Phil Andrews. Phil might have wanted to form an administration with the Labour Party after the 2006 electon but was firmly rejected by the local councillors and the constituency parties as no doubt he would have been by the National Labour Party. The tories had no qualms however and have offered Mr Andrews the mainstream respectability he seems to crave. It seems the Tories are willing to compromise their morals at every level as they recently joined up with another collection of fascists and homophobes in the European Parliament. Will they do anything for power? And as far as Mr Andrews praising Labour Party members and describing them as "good people", I can only say his judgement seems to be untypically accurate in this respect. Sadly I think this complement is not sincere and is only aimed at winning over Labour voters to his own party. I still have deep suspicions about the political conversion of Mr Andrews from hardline racist fascist to "community" opportunist. Mr Andrews might be trying to sell himself as a friend of the Labour Party but we know that is not the truth. Since he joined forces with the Tory minority he has been part of the systematic mass sackings, privatisation and dismantling of services in Hounslow. In fact a lot of things that Labour supporters find distasteful and repellant. All the while Mr Andrews has been abusive and savage to elected members at every level and the Labour Party in general. Please keep your brown nosing, lies and falseness for your mates down the pub and do not try to con people on this website that you are some kind of lefty friendly cuddly bloke. In your dreams Phil.

Some would call that another classic example of the "smoke and mirrors" strategy of former National Front felon Phil Andrews.Others, who are less charitable, might instead repeat the words used by Tory councillor Peter Carey (who publicly denounced one of Phil's leaflets as being "malicious, mischievous and total rubbish").When Phil recites the details of conversations that he alleges he has had with Labour Party members, you can bet your bottom dollar that he is being economical with the truth. After all, Phil accused me of trying to destabilise Al-ayoby - purely on the grounds that I congratulated Al-ayoby on his promotion to Chair of the URA!So always bear in mind Phil's capacity to twist the truth for his own ends. That is not to say that people should ignore his previous post. Quite the contrary, it is probably very significant: I sense that it heralds a new smear campaign against Ann Keen (the politician who had the decency to stand up and protest about Phil's far right background when he was promoted to the council cabinet). And let's not forget, as a full-time taxpayer-funded political agitator, Phil has certainly got the time (and the inclination) to further undermine Ann.P.S.:- I cannot imagine why any self-respecting Labour Party member would want to have a friendly drink and chat with a bloke who routinely describes their party as "miserable". I suspect that, as always, such "Labour Party members" have a rather more tenuous link with the party than Phil is making out.
