The boat was moored on the Commerce Road side of the canal - you can clearly see where it was by the burnt grass by the towpath. It broke free from its mooring, I guess the ropes simply burnt through, and drifted down stream. The boat owners had to boat-hook it away from the other boats. Then there were problems when the firemen arrived and started hosing water onto the boat - of course it started moving further as the water pressure pushed it away. It took them about 15 minutes to get the fire out.Now we have a stinking (and it really is powerful and bad burnt plastic smell) and polluting wreck stuck in the moorings. From memory it took British Waterways a couple of weeks to remove the last burnt out boat - lets hope they are quicker this time.
