The Kelly Report on MP's Expenses and the Keens
The report into MP's expenses prepared by the committee chaired by Sir Christopher Kelly proposes that MPs would be banned from claiming the cost of mortgage interest payments on expenses and from employing relatives. It also proposes to end the payment of "golden goodbyes" to MP's who lose their seats. Gordon Brown has promised to implement the recommendations of the report. The full story is on:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8330020.stmAs is well known, Ann and Alan Keen have both been claiming the cost of their mortgage payments on their flat in Waterloo even though they own a house in Brentford, nine miles from the House of Commons. It has also been reported that Alan Keen has employed his son. However it is reported that the changes may be phased in over 5 years. In that case the Keens are likely to be uanaffected as they are both likely to lose their seats at the General Election and collect their "golden goodbyes" under the present rules.
