Why are so many English people unemployed?

"I don't necessarily think it's racist, more like inaccurate and looking for a scapegoat to try and explain away the pure and simple fact that the working classes get screwed over regardless of colour or creed"Preblimmincisely Stephane I doubt the people who pay low wages are socialists,they're capitalists,the only way that someone can be rich is if several others are kept poor.I was talking to a businessman earlier this week,he gave me a piece of equipment that normaly costs £1000+,I was a bit taken back,he said "It's alright they only cost £20 to have made in China".  I'm afraid that's  where properly paid jobs in Britain have gone,exported in the name of greed,that said we (Joe Soap)are equally to blame,it is us that are buying giant TVs,computers etc.hand over fist.(Switches to the voice of doom)  Payback time is a commin' fast.

Maybe it's you Ian.. Like I said, I've never had that problem, nor has anyone else I know (largely most of the people I know work for minimum wage.) I've been working in the service industry for 7 years and have never missed out on a job because of nationality or language.My partner lost a job to a guy with down's syndrome once, not his finest hour but hey the guy wasn't Polish!

Yes Stephanie, I do apply for minimum wage jobs and I NEVER get a reply, despite the fact that I have been working in the warehousing sector for 14 and a half years.

all parties will find anything to gain votes, any subject to gain votes, but for labour to bring this up,voices peoples concerns,and,will they be branded racist.which in this case i think isn't true.

RobertNew Labour are certainly not above pandering to bigotry when there's an election campaign on the horizon.During the 2006 local elections in my own ward, Isleworth, one of the Labour candidates was a man who has done some truly excellent work to promote awareness and tolerance on behalf of the gay community (I hate that term but can't think of a better one - which bus route is this community on?).  As a relative newbie with not a vast record of political achievement behind him one would have thought this fact would have featured prominently on his promotional material, but in fact it didn't get a mention.  Why else would this be other than the fear that he and his colleagues might have risked losing the homophobic vote?

I phoned an job advert that had exactly the same requirement around summer last year.Told the bloke I didn't have a working visa and he said it doesn't mean a minimum working visa of 6 months (as far as he knew you couldn't get less than 6 months on a working visa) it means a minimum uk eligibility to work of having a 6 month working visa. So I guess it makes me a (what was it?) PC apologist? but I think it probably was bad wording (I was offered the job, incidentally.)  Do you actually apply for min-wage jobs or do you just like to moan about the fact that sometimes the ads are geared at people from overseas? Let me tell you as somebody who DOES work for minimum wage and has done in various positions for the last 6 years (I like the flexibility these jobs so often come with) I've NEVER had a problem getting any of the jobs and I certainly haven't been treated in any unfair disadvantage next to somebody from another country.

Unskilled and semi skilled migrant workers reduce costs by working cheaper than their indigenous counterparts and therefore get the the jobs – keeping the locals out of work. With the major parties not wishing to dirty their hands on this problem, who can blame the simple working class for listening to the BNP as they speak their language and address the problem that the established parties wont talk about, let alone tackle.

No doubt the PC apologists will claim this is just a case of bad wording, but it clearly shows that some employers have the preconception that their vacancies will be filled by migrant workers.

The frank answer is that there is no cost to employing organisations of unemployment, therefore in some cases a slightly more able Polish guy may get preference over a British guy , because that is how the free market operates. In the 1980s the Conservative politician Francis Pym suggested reducing hours to give the unemployed jobs - to make that work large organisations would have to be made to pay the JSA/IS of local unemployed people , rather than it falling on the national taxpayer.

The source of my information is that I actually know unemployed manual workers. Do you know any manual workers who are out of work? No, I suppose the only manual worker you know is the man who does your garden. I don't live an Ivory Tower and I'm telling you what I hear from people on the ground floor.And before anyone brands me a banner waver for the BNP I'm happy to state that I am a member and supporter of a political party and will be voting for them... And that party is not the BNP.

PhilI personally think that a lot of the hysteria about the BNP is being whipped up by the Labour Party and their fellow travellers on the Left such as the Limp Dims who are indeed worried that the BNP will take votes and seats away from them because of the consistent failure of the Labour Party to look after the interests of their traditional working class supporters.It is also a cynical ploy by the Labour Party to try to persuade ethinic minority voters and immigrants such as myself to vote for the Labour Party  to prevent the BNP coming to power.I have news for the Labour Party and those who are thinking of supporting them:1. The BNP is nasty and racist but is not a real threat to anyone.2. The BNP has no chance whatsover of coming to power and being influential anywhere. 3. Ethnic muinorities and immigrants are well respected and prorected by public opinion and the law of the land.4. Ethnic minorities and immigrants will vote for the Conservatives, Labour, the Limp Dums and other mainstream parties on economic, social, law and order  and other policies as well as on the personalities of the party leaders. 5.David Cameron has a clear advanatage over Gordon Brown who angered many ethnic minority and immigrant voters in his despicable, racist  and possible illegal call for "British Jobs for British workers. "

DavidThe BNP has announced its desire to field candidates throughout the borough, but my understanding is that thus far it has only identified four candidates.  I believe it intends to field these in the west of the borough, where it also plans to stand a parliamentary candidate.    Of course circumstances do change and we need to be vigilant, but as you rightly say there is no evidence of any extraordinary level of support for them in this borough, indeed their percentage share of the vote in the recent European elections locally was derisory.

There is no evidence of a swing to the BNP in this part of London. In fact it is doubtful if the BNP will even field candidates.

And I'm sure if one did the PC brigade would soon be screaming racism."maybe it is because the commodities being handled are labelled in Polish."I've worked in warehouses where goods are labelled in English and some employees do not speak English, so why should this be an issue? In a warehouse you only need to be able to match goods to the paperwork and differentiate between different items, and you don't actually have to understand what is written to do that.
