Lies, Damned Lies and letters from David Hughes
In a recent letter to one of our local papers Mr Hughes claims that the Council is falling down on the job as regards the collection of Council Tax: I thought I would check this out (since I doubted that Mr Hughes had, prefering to shoot from the lip.)Figures from the Finance Dept at the Council make interesting reading: %Council Tax Collected2002/2003 - 93.82%2003/2004 - 92.98%2004/2005 - 94.56%2005/2006 - 94.56%2006/2007 - 94.69%2007/2008 - 95.83%2008/2009 - 95.40%So the situation is actually improved. However, this is not to be complacent since the tax that is not collected represents many times the value of the school uniform grant.Nevertheless, I am suprised that Mr Hughes should post such tripe without first checking his fact. People tell me that Mr Hughes used to be a Councillor- his wife still is - and as such he should know how important it is to democracy that the public are not misled with false information. We have heard recently that the UK committed itself to fighting in Iraq on the basis of gossip a taxi-driver heard spoken in the back of his cab so it is surely incumbent on those with a public position (or formerly) to ensure that they speak the truth (no matter what their view or the interpretation they put on it is.)
