In February a couple of years ago I was about to go to Poland which had temperatures considerably lower than anything we have ever known here and was knee deep in snow. Being someone who falls over at the drop of a hat for absolutely no reason I was petrified about having an accident whilst there, Someone at work suggested I buy some "snow boots" and she dragged me to what appears to be some sort of discount sports shop in the North End Road where I bought a particularly unattractive pair of not terribly comfortable boots for about £7 (I think). I wore them in Poland and for the first time in my life I was able to stride about with some degree of confidence and managed to stay upright the whole time there. They came out of my boot when the snows came last February and once again I managed to walk about feeling fairly confident. Yesterday I decided they were the best things I had ever bought. They seem to be fairly waterproof with a sole that is not unlike a car tyre. They are calf length zip up nylon with a fake fur lining and trim and even this morning I managed to walk on the ice rink that was my car park without tipping up. I have felt one or two slippy bits even wearing these boots but otherwise I declare them an absolute miracle. The moral of the story is, if you don't much care what you look like, for not too much money there would appear to be boots available that will help keep us upright in these dire weather conditions. Good luck hunting them down - just ask for snow boots I think!
