Labour Party mailing

I have just received two near identical campaign mailings from Mrs Keen, this clueless woman has clearly sent out both the final and draft versions of her latest propaganda.Scanning the two for signs of which is which I noticed one telling difference: One starts 'In the months ahead' the other 'In this election', someone clearly knows something Gordon hasn't announced yet.

I note the particular interest of the Electoral Commission in marginal constituencies and the comments that a high percentage of the candidates' election costs are on producing unsolicited leaflets.

Well great minds and all that Tim, I was going to post that link up today myself!The beauty of this particular resource is that smear leaflets produced in one campaign in one ward or constituency can be used to the detriment of the party producing them throughout the country.  Rest assured the ICG will be using it to maximum effect, assuming we are given reason to do so.

In connection with election mailings, I was interested to skim through the release of information from the Electoral Commission on the options that were identified for monitoring compliance in the forthcoming campaign and their decision on which one to adopt.http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/monitoring_and_enforcing_laws_onI had not previously heard of http://www.thestraightchoice.org/Checking, it only has one of the leaflets I have had - so there's lots of scope to supply them with the rest of our stuff !

It's still not too late to put in the nomination papers.....but I wouldn't like the  votes to fragment too much.

I didn't get any Labour mailingI guess we are not high on Mrs Keen's priority list.I got the one from Mary Macleod yesterday though. It looks Ok but the best one was received today from the ICG. Open, HONEST and to the point. A shame they aren't standing for Parliament

David,You Tories have been putting out cAshcroft-funded glossy leaflets saying 'Mary Macleod needs your support - vote for change', so that's your election expenses triggered

There is nothing illegal in starting a campaign before an election is called. If your material declares your candidature then the costs must be included in returns for expenditure after the election. If the material does not mention elections, voting and candidates explicitly then it is not election expenditure.Note that much of the national advertising on billboards will already be part of national election expenditure.

I did wonder about that myself, but after spending a good hour reading numerous Acts of Parliament I couldn't find anything conclusive. If someone from another party can confirm your suspicion I do still have the evidence in my possession.

Mrs Keen may well have done something illegal if she has started her election campaign before the election has been called.
