Why does the Chancellor hate pubs.

The Chancellor has again raised the tax on beer,. Over the last two years the tax has risen by 25% acording to CAMRA. With 6 pubs closing every day you would have thought he would have not put the tax up.He has also increased the tax on cider by 10%, this could kill off the small producers.

Because he- like Gordon Brown- is from Scotland and has no idea how important pubs are to social life and community cohesion in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Because he thinks that we the electorate are stupid and easily appeased because he has raised the thresh-hold tax on Million Pound homes to 50K "we are all so excited "after all there must only be about 100 in the country who can afford 1 Million, that we still don't know that once again it is we the majority who have to pay the piper, if he was so intent on saving 11 Billion he could have cancelled Trident and saved 5 Billion straight away.

Pubs closing down does have a lot to do with the big companies who tie licensees in to buying over-priced beer, at last the licensees are fighting back, but I agree this hardly helps the situation. But if beer, fags etc. are not the target, what else would you tax? Personally I hardly ever go in a pub and I gave up smoking years ago, but I do drive. I have no problem paying tax aslong as EVERYONE pays proportionally, the problem is the mega rich never do, the 50% rate is well overdue.

The tax rise also applies to supermarkets, who generally sell drinks for less than half the price that pubs do. It's not the Chancellor who hates pubs, it's the breweries and their restrictive tenancy contracts.
