Robert  You've summed up our situation succinctly, not good is it? I haven't voted for anyone since 1997 for all of the reasons you listed.      I think a drastic change to the system is called for,a planned one would be good but unlikely, unfortunately much more likely is an unplanned one. What do I mean by that? Well if things go on as they are and I've no reason to believe anything will change whoever wins the election, I think there may well be a general revolt, probably not a full blown revolution, much more likely a general strike(even by those not in unions).  It seems to me that the art of government is to find the limits of what the Oiks will stand for and and what they wont, the closer to the lower end the more successful they consider themselves. Hitler I think it was that said "How lucky for us that the people don't think",that could easily be ascribed to any British politician.  At present we are pacified by being drip fed goodies, cars, flat screen TVs,shoes with no holes in,mostly only things we can purchase courtesy of China and their low wages....that situation wont last, payback time is just around the corner, that's when the flan will really hit the fan.  Back to the UK Government! About two months ago I was flicking through the TV channels and lighted on the Parliament Channel,it was showing the "Select Committee on Banking Scrotes".That'll be a laugh I thought,it was absolutely rivetting,I watched it for 5 hours until 3am.      Here we have a politically mixed bunch questioning various people, the heads of banks first, scrotes to a man. I have to say that I couldn't tell which party the questioners were from, their question neutral to almost a fault.  Next up,two ecomomics professors,Prof.John Kay and Prof.Charles Goodhart, one slightly right of centre the other about centre. From the outset of their questioning you could see that the politicos were in awe of the profs, asking questions to the the best of their ability only to be answered by an "Ah but if you do that then this will happen,if you want to go down that type of route then it would be better to do such and such". Sometimes the Profs would break off for an inter-Prof discussion then come up with a brilliant solution to the problem in hand, you could actually see the politicos slapping their foreheads metaphorically.  Now say I,why can't Parliament be like that all the time,at no time was party politics raised,at all times the best solution was saught and got.I'd vote for that!
