Heathrow to be closed all week? yippeeeeee

Sunny weather and no planesDoesn't get better than this!maybe Londoners will rise up against the malicious idiots who expanded a small airport into this International monster right on the edge of a huge metropolis. Quality of life improved enormously for millionsGo volcano, go.

Oh yes yippee, I'm sure the many businesses around Europe that depends on air travel are are losing hundreds of thousands of pounds a day, or people who are stranded far from home, are also thinking it doesn't get better than this...a selfish thread :-(Strangely enough airports tend to be near large cities because that's where the highest demand is.  Paris Charles De Gaulle is 14 miles from central Paris, Schiphol is under 6 miles from Amsterdam.  Lets stick an airport in the middle of the rural countryside so not only is the countryside blighted by the airport itself, but also by the volumes of traffic and general increased activity that result from an airport.As you can tell, I'm not in the slightest bit bothered whether Runway 3 gets built or not.

Yep, for 24 hours it was something of a novelty, but it is becoming increasingly serious now and will have major effects upon both the British and European economies, and everyone will be adversely affected in one way or another.  No doubt the typical Brit mentality will be to say how fantastic no plane noise is and then to moan like crazy when the disruption affects the same individual directly.

well you idiots, nothing we can do can affect it either way, so just make the most of it.It does show how reliant we are on something that can be taken away just like that.If you are in a reflective mood, just think how much out of year you benefit from Heathrow vs suffer.

Nic, you should know by now that you can't say anything light or positive on this board without upsetting the angry brigade! Yes we know it's not good for industry and there will be many who are inconvenienced but it is lovely and quiet isn't it?

I think you've forgotten how much comes into this country and goes out business wise  by air. We may be dependant on air travel and cargo, we are also now dependant on the Internet and hundreds of other things. Do you suggest we go back to living in caves? You may think this is a cause for celebration, others obviously don't, that does not class them as the 'angry brigade', is no-one allowed to disagree with your words of wisdom?

It's not that you 'dare' to express a different view, it's just the joyless way you do it! Haven't you noticed any improvement in quality of life in the last couple of days?Personaly I don't mind if my asparagus and kumquats from Peru or wherever take a bit longer to arrive.

That suggestion in itself puts a smile on my face given the tedium of the vast number of political threads on here !.The sun is out and it's a lovely weekend, personally my direct quality of life hasn't been in any way enhanced or harmed by the lack of planes.

I agree Adam, it has been beautiful, I was lucky enough to take a boat trip to the O2 yesterday to see 'Dancing on Ice', my Mother's Day present from my sons. There is nowhere in the World like London on a sunny day, there were thousands of people enjoying the river and parks and all this wonderful city offers. I haven't noticed the missing plane noise, I have only missed the planes stacking coming in to land, and it really looked odd not sseing any planes over central London. On the other hand we are supposed to be heading for Australia via Singapore next week so hope the volcano calms down before then!

It's not looking good for next week. Qantas and Singapore Airlines are asking passengers to re-book as they want to get the back log cleared.

Well, it was good to have a BBQ on Saturday and not have to stop talking to our guests every couple of minutes waiting for a plane to pass.  The aircraft noise has never disturbed my sleep or woken me up but good grief, without the planes, I am now being woken every morning by twittering birds!!!
