Best gun to shoot magpies

What is the best rifle to get to shoot magpies (I think it's legal but advice appreciated). The ones around here are driving me mad. Can they be eaten? Any suggestions for recipes - I've done pigeon; they're nice. Mmmmm.

Cut and pasted from a website I found - 'Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the Government allows landowners to shoot and humanely trap magpies if such action is necessary to protect wild birds or prevent serious damage to livestock or crops.'So in short I'm glad to say I don't think it's legal...
