Thames Water

To ask the Prime Minister, through our new M.P., "Can we please have a choice of providers for our domestic water supply like we do with gas and electricity. Water piping supply can't be so different from the gas supply network.  Imposing this upon Thames Water may be complicated but not impossible, because British Telecom's monopoly was broken up in this way.

There is no National Grid for water. telecoms and electricity and gas are connected networks.Whilst a water National Grid is a good idea the mix of hard and soft water in the UK makes it hugely difficult and costly. Like mixing Petrol and diesel.Over 90% of BT shares are now owned by overseas institutions. It's dividends and profits support overseas investments and jobs in other countries.A large proportion of the water industry is also owned by outside corporations and thus completely vulnerable to the economies outside of our own.Personally utilities, especially ones that consume non- renewable sources should be state owned and regulated and a level playing field for all consumers.In the main I believe in a free market economy. But there are a few exceptions and energy and water should be out of the loop with it's profits going into research and development and state shareholders. But not for propping up or funding other parts of the state.
