Plant a tree outside your street

This all sounds very nice but I look back to my mother having a tree planted outside her house.  She was very proud of her tree and would look after it.  She took a photo every year to see how big it was growing.  Then this well looked after tree thanked her for all her care by spreading it's roots under her house and damaging the drains and the foundations.  This tree then cost my mother thousands of pounds in building work.  So think twice!!??

It's also a question of maintaining the tree which often gets overlooked. It has to be the right species for the right area. We had a flowering cherry outside which was just beautiful - unfortunately it wasn't planted correctly and the roots came up and made the pavement very dangerous so it had to come out. You might also consider if you are likely to want a vehicular crossover at some point as the chances of removing a tree for this purpose is very slim, and having a crossover installed near a tree is also iffy.
