Family History - Surname: Field - Brook Road South - Brentford

Does anyone remember the Field family growing up in Brook Road South, Brentford, pre-war - Margaret (Marjorie) Horne (nee Field)(88 years old) died recently and relatives and friends would welcome any information - further to the mention in the church service.

Brentford Library must have been one of the first in the country. Brentford Clinic was very early to.Must have been a very enlightend council.

Hi Neil, I'll try and obtain the 1860 map. A good idea.In the meantime, here is a rare-ish picture of the old Pub in nearby Windmill Road! A Glenn Mason,Australia picture!

Hi Jimhave you access to the 1860's OS map. I think that is the one that only shows the houses along the football ground side opf the road and I think it still shows the stream.

This Alan Godfrey Map (ISBN 0 85054 509 9)+ shows a Mission Hall where the bakery once was!+ you tell which Brook Road houses hadn't yet been built!+ there's no Mafeking Avenue  well the battle of Mafeking was some years away!+ "Griffin Park" was still an orchard!+ there's that cricket ground! (still shown on a 1965 map I have)+ see THE BROOK stream near Enfield Road/Challis Road.  someone said you can hear running water near there!+ Anything else you have noticed?

Some 5 years ago, a Forum regular Bill Drinkwater, raised a question about local streams and several people mentioned the significance of "Brook" Road.We learned that The Brook flowed down from the Ealing borders via Enfield Road/ Walk and challis Road.Friend William reported:"I used to live in Brook road south and when I was only 10-11 years old the road collapsed and you could see the brook running under the road that was in1956/7.The part that collapsed was between Mafakin avenue and Grovenor road out side no's 29/30"Interesting!

It's good to see this thread chugging along with input from new names and faces.. some past posters too.One recalls Peter Rutts website which used to attract correspondence from ex-Brentfordians all over the world. That historic website seems to have disappeared with all the stories and images too.Thankfully Celia Cotton is making amends and one can enjoy a "happy hour" browsing through her massive lists and images.There was a Mr Field running the Three Pigeons Pub long long ago...for example!http://www.bhsproject.co.uk/index.shtml

l grew up living at no 37 brook road south,and there was afamily named field who lived afew doors away.l lived in one of 4 cottages now demolished and other houses built in there place.They lived either no31 or 31b which was a house that laid back,there neighbours name was Day peggy and alf and 2 children linda and alan.l belived the faimily belonged to the salvaton army and one son robert played in the band,he had 2 sisters who were twins and who with robert had ginger hair.

Ah, so these black doors in Albany Road, on the corner with Brook Road South, once belonged to the bakery? And what about that odd looking water pipe Sue, does your Mum remember it ever being used?

Some of the early ones date from the late 1860's. 65 Brook Rd South dates from the 1880's. The oldest are the one behind the football ground.

There were so many fields about.The houses on Bradfords bakers side were not as old as the opposite side of road, they must be at least 120 years old.

my family lived at 5 brook rd, my mum is 88, maybe she will remember the fields.Does anyone know how long the houses all around there have been there for?

This substantial scan of the Brook Road South page..showing residents in 1938..also shows a William Field living at No.39. Was he related? You can see the names of his neighbours and the businesses.Between Nos 1 and 31 ..I have met a resident would has lived there over 70 years. Perhaps a leaflet drop along there would produce some interesting results ..at this special and sad time.

Only a couple of weeks ago on this forum Jim O'Reardon and Bernadette were discussing the Roman Catholic School that existed in Brook Road South...between Cliften Road and Hamilton Road..opposite where a Mrs Field lived at No.71We then came across this picture of a group of local Brook Road residents going off on a coach outing..from just up the road. This extract from Kelly's Directory (1938)suggests that the Field Family was very extensivein dear ole Brentford before the War. Family membersin the surrounding streets too.Maybe Age Concern at Alexandra House could help youwith names of that generation still around.
