Most animal charities will charge for kittens and puppies as they have incurred expenses looking after the animals, but at least the animals have generally been checked over and may even be vaccinated and/or chipped. We got one of ours as a kitten from Gumtree and he cost £40.00, the other one was adopted as an adult from a relative so we didn't pay for him, but to us they're are both worth their weight in gold. Adults are easier to home I think as you don't alwsys have to have the vaccinations straight away and neutering is usually already done, the expense of keeping any animal should be taken on board, vets bills are not cheap and the insurance is useless and also very dear.
