Cannabis destroys cancer cells... reveals research at Barts and The London, Queen Mary's School of M

The kind of information not being reported;Researchers investigating the role of cannabis in cancer therapy reveal it has the potential to destroy leukaemia cells, in a paper published in the March 2006 edition of Letters in Drug Design & Discovery.  Led by Dr Wai Man Liu, at Barts and the London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, the team has followed up on their findings of 2005 which showed that the main active ingredient in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, has the potential to be used effectively against some forms of cancer.  Dr Liu has since moved to the Institute of Cancer in Sutton where he continues his work into investigating the potential therapeutic benefit of new anti-cancer agents. It has previously been acknowledged that cannabis-based medicines have merit in the treatment of cancer patients as a painkiller; appetite stimulant and in reducing nausea, but recently evidence has been growing of its potential as an anti-tumour agent.  The widely reported psychoactive side effects and consequent legal status of cannabis have, however, complicated its use in this capacity.  Although THC and its related compounds have been shown to attack cancer cells by interfering with important growth-processing pathways, it has not hitherto been established exactly how this is achieved. Now Dr Liu and his colleagues, using highly sophisticated microarray technology – allowing them to simultaneously detect changes in more than 25,000 genes in cells treated with THC – have begun to uncover further the existence of crucial processes through which THC can kill cancer cells and potentially promote survival.  Further, Dr Liu found that the mechanism of cannabis may be independent of the presence of receptors – proteins found on the surface of cells to which other signalling molecules bind.  Binding of molecules to receptors elicits a response in the cell, be it growth or death.  The finding that cannabis action may not require the presence of these receptors introduces the possibility that the drug may be used more widely as the cancer cell’s dependence on the cannabis receptor is removed.Whilst leukaemia treatment is on the whole successful, some people cannot be treated with conventional therapy - 25 per cent of children with leukaemia fail to respond to traditional treatment leaving their prognosis outcome poor.  Dr Liu’s research findings provide a crucial first step towards the development of new therapies that can eradicate a deadly disease which affects millions of children and adults worldwide.Dr Liu said: “It is important to stress that these cannabis-like substances are far removed from the cannabis that is smoked. These novel compounds have been specifically designed to be free of the psychoactive features, whilst maintaining anti-cancer action. Ultimately, understanding the fundamental mechanisms of these compounds will provide us with insights into developing new drugs that can be used to effectively treat cancers.”Ends-For further information, please contact:Alexandra FernandesDeputy Head of CommunicationsQueen Mary, University of LondonTel: +44 (0) 20 7882 7910

August 02, 2010from PreventDisease WebsiteCannabinoids, the active components of marijuana, inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals and also kill cancer cells. Western governments have known this for a long time yet they continued to suppress the information so that cannabis prohibition and the profits generated by the drug industry proliferated. The article below was published on Americans for Safe Access website in November of 2003 by author Steve Kubby:A new study published in Nature Reviews-Cancer provides an historic and detailed explanation about how THC and natural cannabinoids counteract cancer, but preserve normal cells. The study by Manuel Guzmán of Madrid Spain found that cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana, inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals. They do so by modulating key cell-signaling pathways, thereby inducing direct growth arrest and death of tumor cells, as well as by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that supply the tumor. The Guzman study is very important according to Dr. Ethan Russo, a neurologist and world authority on medical cannabis:“Cancer occurs because cells become immortalized; they fail to heed normal signals to turn off growth. A normal function of remodelling in the body requires that cells die on cue. This is called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. That process fails to work in tumors. THC promotes its reappearance so that gliomas, leukemias, melanomas and other cell types will in fact heed the signals, stop dividing, and die.”“But, that is not all,” explains Dr. Russo: “The other way that tumors grow is by ensuring that they are nourished: they send out signals to promote angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Cannabinoids turn off these signals as well. It is truly incredible, and elegant.”In other words, this article explains several ways in which cannabinoids might be used to fight cancer, and, as the article says,“Cannabinoids are usually well tolerated, and do not produce the generalized toxic effects of conventional chemotherapies."Usually, any story that even suggests the possibility of a new treatment for cancer is greeted with headlines about a “cancer cure” - however remote in the future and improbable in fact it might be. But if marijuana is involved, don’t expect any coverage from mainstream media, especially since mainstream editors have been quietly killing this story for the past thirty years…That’s right, news about the ability of pot to shrink tumors first surfaced, way back in 1974. Researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institutes of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice - lung and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia. The Washington Post reported on the 1974 study - in the “Local” section - on Aug. 18, 1974. Under the headline, “Cancer Curb Is Studied,” it read in part:“The active chemical agent in marijuana curbs the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice and may also suppress the immunity reaction that causes rejection of organ transplants, a Medical College of Virginia team has discovered.”The researchers,“found that THC slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers, and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent.”“News coverage of the Madrid discovery has been virtually nonexistent in this country. The news broke quietly on Feb. 29, 2000 with a story that ran once on the UPI wire about the Nature Medicine article,” complained MarijuanaNews.com editor Richard Cowan, who said he was only able to find the article through a link that appeared briefly on the Drudge Report Web page. “The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times all ignored the story, even though its newsworthiness is indisputable: a benign substance occurring in nature destroys deadly brain tumors,” added Cowan. On March 29, 2001, the San Antonio Current printed a carefully researched, bombshell of a story by Raymond Cushing titled, “POT SHRINKS TUMORS; GOVERNMENT KNEW IN ‘74.” Media coverage since then has been non-existent, except for a copy of the story on Alternet. It is hard to believe that the knowledge that cannabis can be used to fight cancer has been suppressed for almost thirty years, yet it seems likely that it will continue to be suppressed. Why? According to Cowan, the answer is because it is a threat to cannabis prohibition.“If this article and its predecessors from 2000 and 1974 were the only evidence of the suppression of medical cannabis, then one might perhaps be able to rationalize it in some herniated way. However, there really is massive proof that the suppression of medical cannabis represents the greatest failure of the institutions of a free society, medicine, journalism, science, and our fundamental values,” Cowan notes.Millions of people have died horrible deaths and in many cases, families exhausted their savings on dangerous, toxic and expensive drugs. Now we are just beginning to realize that while marijuana has never killed anyone, marijuana prohibition has killed millions.Sourcesafeaccessnow.orggsalternative.com

From the daily Mail a very confusing article if you read the first post. It doesn't actually state which research paper the information comes from only which magazine first published it!Cannabis 'raises the risk of cancer and other killer diseases'By FIONA MACRAELast updated at 9:05 AM on 25th November 2010Dying for a joint: Research has found that cannabis use increases the chance of fatal cancers and other diseasesCannabis damages the immune system, leaving the body open to diseases from pneumonia to cancer, research suggests. In experiments, THC, the chemical behind the ‘high’ of cannabis fuelled the production of a flood of cells thought to weaken the body’s inbuilt defences. The finding suggests that cannabis, the drug of choice for many Britons, increases vulnerability to breast, bladder, lung and other tumours, as well as bacterial infections such as Legionnaires disease.Worryingly, skunk, the super-strength cannabis that is particularly popular, may be extra-damaging, due to its extra-high THC content. While cannabis’s links to devastating mental health problems are well known, its potential to wreck the immune system has received less attention. The American research focused on the effect of cannabis chemicals including THC on the immune system. In tests on mice, they triggered the production of a ‘massive’ number of immune cells called myeloid-derived suppressor cells or MDSCs.These normally act as a safety brake on the immune system stopping its battle against disease from spiralling out of control. But in the case of cancer, they may actually make it easier for tumours to grow, the European Journal of Immunology reports.Lead researcher Dr Prakash Nagarkatti, from the University of South Carolina, said: ‘These results raise interesting questions on whether increased susceptibility to certain types of cancers or infections caused from smoking marijuana results from induction of MDSCs.Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1332838/Cannabis-raises-risk-cancer-killer-diseases.html#ixzz16OPiNXnb

More cut and paste but some people put things better than me;Peter ReynoldsThe life and times of Peter ReynoldsThe Truth About Sativex (The £10 million government sponsored 'wonder' Medicine made from Cannabis of 'little or no medical or therapeutic Value').Sativex is cannabis soaked in alcohol.  Nothing more, nothing less.GW Pharmaceuticals would have you believe that it’s a “pharmaceutical” product because according to its research that’s what patients prefer.  As the GW spokesman puts it, “It’s a pharmaceutical solution, formulated with the ability to deliver a precise dose and with stringent standards of quality, safety and efficacy”.In fact, what GW does is grow high quality cannabis under pretty much the same conditions as most illegal growers.  It uses clonal propagation to ensure consistent levels of cannabinoids.  Lighting and hydroponic nutrition is computer controlled with automatic ventilation. It really is no different from the most sophisticated and efficent illegal cannabis farms.  It’s a recognised and proven technology now also used by Bedrocan in Holland, the Dutch government’s exclusive medicinal cannabis grower and Gropech in California which is building a new 60,000 sq ft facility in Oakland for a crop worth $50 million per year. The difference between these crops from legal and illegal growers is insignificant.  It’s similar to buying your tomatoes from the supermarket or the farm shop.GW takes its high quality cannabis, chops it up and soaks it in alcohol with the application of gentle heat.  Then, with the addition of a little peppermint oil to mask the taste, the filtered liquid is packaged into tiny little aerosol bottles.  Each spray delivers 2.7mg of THC and 2.5mg of CBD.  What GW doesn’t tell you that it also contains all the other 60 cannabinoids found in the plant, each of which has its own mechanism of action and effect.I applaud GW Pharmaceuticals for bringing the enormous benefits of cannabinoid therapy into the 21st century. It’s nothing new though. The medicinal value of the plant has been known and widely used for thousands of years.  Only in the last century has it been demonised by lies and propaganda.  It would be a mistake though to think that Sativex is anything different from the plant itself.  It’s just been wrapped up in a marketing and physical package which has enabled stupid and cowardly politicians to accept it.In fact, Sativex remains just as illegal in Britain as herbal cannabis.  Even though it has received MHRA approval for use in the treatment of MS spasticity and may be prescribed by a doctor, it remains a schedule 1 drug under the Misuse Of Drugs Act.  The Home Office has indicated that it intends to amend the law but has not yet done so.  This means that any pharmacist who dispenses Sativex at present is guilty of exactly the same criminal offence as any street dealer in weed or hash. The Home Office will, of course, turn a blind eye to this but not to medicinal herbal cannabis even though, in every sense, it is identical to Sativex (except that Sativex also contains alcohol and peppermint oil).  The stark idiocy of British law is revealed.Never before has there been a better example of the how the law is an ass and so are the spineless politicians who support it.

I have cut and pasted this article don't read it if it taxes your reality!!Legalise Cannabis Alliance News Database result:Alzheimer's: Marijuana as Effective MedicineDr. Phil LevequeSalem-NewsMonday 25 Oct 2010Cannabis is getting much positive publicity and seems to be regaining its popularity of one hundred years ago when it was the most widely used drug for about 100 different diseases.Woman with Alzheimer'sSource: thefreshscent.com(MOLALLA, Ore.) - There is a big toodoo nowadays about Alzheimers which has turned into almost an epidemic for old folks with some even in their 50's. So far nobody seems to have put a handle on it and I won't either. The latest information seems to be that there are senile plaques in the cerebral cortex and subcortical grey matter but whether these plaques are a cause or effect seems to be up for grabs.I don't know either. My Merck manual says that four million Americans have it, mostly those over 60 years old. It is a very expensive disease for nursing homes and nursing care probably at least 100 billion dollars per year.As a Medical Marijuana doctor, I jumped into this fracas when I heard that a lady spouse of an Alzheimers patient went to a Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee meeting of The Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) and demanded that her husband be given a permit. She was successful and the medical statistics from OMMP indicate that somewhat less than 50 people have Marijuana permits for this disease. It is called Alzheimers Rage. The above really didn't surprise me because there are several Central Nervous System (CNS) diseases for which Cannabis/Marijuana (C/MJ) works very well. These include ALS, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsonism, PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs). I don't know if anyone has figured out why C/MJ works for these conditions but why ask if those suffering say that C/MJ works.Tod Mikiyuria, the foremost scholar in this area, says that C/MJ works as a modulator which is a term of general meaning which possibly just means that it works. The standard drugs are almost worthless, many seem to be Cholinergics related to Acetyl Choline, the standard Neuro transmitter nerve cell to cell and nerve cell to muscle. At any rate C/MJ seems to work better than any of the heavily advertised drugs.Cannabis/Marijuana is simultaneously getting much positive publicity and seems to be regaining its popularity of one hundred years ago when it was the most widely used drug for about 100 different diseases. Those of us advocates for Medical Marijuana who have suffered scorn and derision for DEVIL WEED causing REEFER MADNESS can finally sayhttp://www.salem-news.com/articles/october252010/alzheimers-marijuana-pl.php

Adam only the narrow minded could possibly argue that this is propaganda, it is fact! just as it's a fact that a Spanish Pharmaceutics  company registered a patent on cannabis based cancer medication (that one is not THC based and can be made from low THC hemp). It is also a fact that THC based treatment for MRSA is also available. These breakthroughs are not being published because it flies in the face of the propaganda being put out by self interest groups in the uk.As you may be aware Sativax, the medical treatment made from cannabis contains mostly alcohol with a dash of peppermint was funded with UK taxpayers money (£10m)and is still not available to UK Patients, unless they get a GP to privately import this medicine at great expense. (only those with MS that has progressed to Spacicity are allowed even this farcical access). The law that bans cannabis (schedule 1 UN Opiates act 1963) is the law that all other acts banning cannabis is based on, states quite clearly that Cannabis has little or no medical or scientific bases. So perhaps you with your vast knowledge on the subject can explain why millions of people the world over use it as medicine and why giant pharmaceutics companies are patenting cannabis based medications or how come I can get a prescription for herbal cannabis in 15 American states as well as Holland and Belgium. As for why I post on the local site its to educate those blinded to the truth; that our Government are lying to its people and are destroying lives and  sacking scientist to maintain a cover up.Ps My partner, Mother to my children is suffering from cancer. Now may I suggest you take your ill informed bigotry and stuff it where the sun doesn't shine so as I can discuss anything I like with other locals on the local website.
