A Quickie For You

although the answer might be lengthy.Are we Brentonians or Brentfordians?

I think “Brentonians” my have started with my Granddads generation to describe being a supporter of the Brentford football club.When I was knee high to a grasshopper, every one in the area was a supporter, so you referred to yourself as a Brentonian even when being asked where you came from.The old name may not fit and Brentfordian (s) may be more correct, but why try and change the way we have said it for years.Sometimes it nice to have something a bit, wacky, daft and doesn’t quite fit in the nanny state we live in now, where everything has to be politically correct and elf and safety mad. ;0)

Brentfordians seems most likely - Brentonians does suggest people from Brent as the `ford` as been omitted with this term. I I expect Bradford dwellers are Bradfordians and not Bradonians. Other examples Parisians, Glaswegians, support this but there are some funny ones - Liverpudlians and Mancunians! It seems to depend on the end of the word and how it is to be pronounced! Liverpoolians or Manchesterians is difficult to say. They were more practical way back then! Good fun this!

Old Actonians, Old Isleworthians, Old Guildfordians are the names used by Old Boy's sports clubs..usually formed by ex pupils of the old grammar schools.Maybe it's just some of us who have adopted the terms Brentfordians and Chiswickians as they were "unused"!

Growing up I only ever heard Brentonians; it is only recently that I've heard people from Brentford referred to as Brentfordians. Doesn't sound right to me! I shall always refer to myself as an old Brentonian.:)

I always thought it was Brentfordians and a quick Google seems to confirm that,Brentonians seem to hail from Brentwood,the Philippines and Hong Kong.   Robert Rankin uses Brentonians,but he was an "incomer" anyway. ;0)
